The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is set to be the next video game that explored Tolkien's Middle-Earth, principally following the character of a Hobbit turned immortal goblin thing - Gollum. Up until recently, we were unsure of when we get to play it, but the recent reveal of the release date places it much sooner than we thought. So if you want a full breakdown of everything we know about Lord of the Rings: Gollum, including gameplay, platforms, and more, read on.

Is There A Lord of the Rings: Gollum: Release Date?

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is officially set to launch on May 25, 2023. This release date comes nearly a year after it was initially supposed to release, as the game has faced several delays so far.

The Lord of the Rings: Trailers

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has a gameplay trailer from Daedelic Entertainment, that explains the purpose of the game and just what they want players to be able to experience. The gameplay is mostly of Gollum walking around various scenes from Middle Earth.

In fact, most of the game will probably be Gollum adventuring around Middle Earth while meeting major characters in the story of the One Ring, like Gandalf and Thranduil. However, these characters were created based on the books’ description of everything - they look pretty different compared to the movies’ version of the characters.

There was also a cinematic trailer that debuted at The Game Awards 2021, that featured Gollum using his mobility to climb up and tip over a huge cauldron of Lava on some unsuspecting Orcs. It didn't reveal any more gameplay or information on the release date, but there was a little explanation of what the game will entail in the trailer description.

"Take on a perilous journey as Gollum, chasing the only thing that is precious to him. From his time as a slave below the Dark Tower to his stay with the Elves of Mirkwood, climb, leap, and sneak your way past dangers. Skillful and sly, Gollum is also torn by his split personality. It is up to you to decide whether the darker side of Gollum takes over or if there is a spark of reason left in what once was Sméagol."

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Story

Gollum’s journey is a long one, and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is supposed to tell that entire story. This could start with his days before he obtained the One Ring, or it could start closer to the beginning of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Either way, Gollum’s journey takes him all around Middle Earth. This could even include the events from The Hobbit series, which would easily connect to Gollum’s involvement in the Lord of the Rings series.

The game’s developers have mentioned that Gollum’s story takes him across Mirkwood, which would place that point of the game in between The Hobbit series and the Lord of the Rings series -- the game could be pretty long.

This game will also show off a different side of the epic journey that so many know and love. Gollum’s there for the entirety of the Lord of the Rings story, yet no one’s ever shown his side of the events that take place.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum: Platforms

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be released on all current platforms, which is a pretty expansive list, so the majority of players should be able to pick up the game as soon as it comes out. Here's the full list of confirmed Lord of the Rings Gollum platforms:

  • PS4
  • PS5
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Nintendo Switch (though at a later date)
  • PC
