The art of Tekken isn’t just in the offence of its characters, but also its defence, so it’s important you know how to block to keep yourself from sustaining and deadly amount of damage in your fights.

Whichever character from the ever-growing roster you’re playing in the game, blocking is a fundamental part of Tekken’s combat and can be pivotal when you’re being forced into a tight sport – so we’re here to show you how to it, as well as how to break blocks too.

How to block in Tekken 8

Much like in Street Fighter 6, blocking is done by simply pressing the directional button that is opposite to the way your character is facing. This can be done with any character, so finding some of the best starting characters to practice with in Tekken 8 will give you the chance to get your blocks down.

If you are facing right, as shown with Yoshimitsu above, you’ll need to press the left directional button on your controller to block any oncoming attacks. You won’t be able to block constantly but rather time it so that you can optimise countering the enemy’s strikes.

How to break blocks in Tekken 8

Your best bet to break blocks in Tekken 8 is to use the Heat mechanic the game offers. While your ordinary blocks, when timed right, will absorb most damage, attacks with the Heat effect will gradually chip away at health bars.

So, if you have backed your opponent into a corner and find them blocking pretty often, try and save your Heat attacks so that you can close the gap, break the block and finish the fight.

That’s everything you need to know about how to block in Tekken 8, as well as how to continue to do damage through your opponent’s blocks.
