After finishing the opening section of Stellar Blade, you're right to wonder whether Tachy is actually dead or is still alive to appear later in the game

That's because following years of characters' fates in media being ambiguous through the "if you don't see the body, they're not dead" rule, Tachy's fate will be both expected and a surprise.

SPOILER WARNING:

Final warning for major spoilers deep into Stellar Blade's story.

Is Tachy dead or alive?

After being injured by the Alpha Naytiba on Star Descent during Stellar Blade's opening, Tachy is alive, but in a pleasant way.

As EVE encounters her at the end of the Alpha Signal mission on Matrix 11, it turns out she'd been contaminated by an Alpha Core and turned into an Alpha Naytiba herself. Forced to fight for the monsters she was trying to purge from the Earth, the commander of the 7th Airborne Squad is now a grotesque mechanical human-Naytiba hybrid.

Tachy alive in Stellar Blade as an Alpha Naytiba

As a result, Tachy becomes Stellar Blade's eight-boss fight within the main campaign. It's a tough boss fight overall, but nothing you can't brute force your way through once you've gotten used to her attack patterns.

Once you win the fight though, Tachy will become free of the Naytiba's control and will die in EVE's arms after handing over her Memorystick to return to Mother Sphere.

Tachy Mode

The most powerful reward for defeating Tachy on Matrix 11, Tachy Mode is another strong set of skills to add to your Stellar Blade arsenal.

Once you harness enough "Tachy Energy", you can press L3 + R3 to enter Tachy Mode and wield her namesake Tachyon Blade. You can then unleash an epic range of attacks in a supercharged state.

For comparison's sake, imagine the Devil Trigger in Devil May Cry or Spartan Rage in the modern God of War games and you'll see what I mean.

Given how popular Tachy has been since her debut in the game's demo, it's still a surely disappointing fate for fans - me included. Nevertheless, getting a great new weapon and skillset in turn makes for a pretty good exchange as far as video games go.
