After years of waiting, Starfield is finally here, and it's likely to be one of the biggest Xbox Game Pass titles ever. However you're digging into the spacefaring RPG from Bethesda Game Studios, you may be wondering if you can play with friends in multiplayer or co-op.

After all, we've seen Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 bring scores of players to Tamriel and the Wasteland respectively - so does Starfield have multiplayer or co-op?

With the game finally here, we finally have an answer - and it's a disappointing one for anyone with dreams of running a pirate crew with buddies, sadly. Here's all we know about Starfield's multiplayer and co-op potential.

Does Starfield have multiplayer or co-op?

A moon in Starfield

Sadly, Starfield will not have any multiplayer components at all - it is a completely single-player experience. When looking at any store, including Steam, it lists the game as single-player. In 2020, Game Director Todd Howard also confirmed the game would be a single-player game, so you also won’t be able to play the game with a friend locally, either.

Without co-op, the game may be better off, as it can be more focused on your own character. It will be interesting to see if the modding community will attempt to put multiplayer in the game, as we saw with Elden Ring

For now, we can only suggest checking out the likes of No Man's Sky or Elite Dangerous for your multiplayer spacefaring fix. In fact, we've got a whole list of games to recommend if you're looking for something close to what Starfield offers.
