Usually, Sims in The Sims 4 can only have a maximum of up to three traits at once depending on their age, and Expansions and Packs rarely add new ones to the game.

That's where mods come in to expand what's on offer, allowing your Sims to have even more personality traits to affect their moods and activity preferences - so here's a rundown of some fantastic trait-based mods to add some more life to The Sims 4.

Best trait mods for The Sims 4

#12 - New Traits Pack

Traits in The Sims 4

All aboard! First up on our journey of trait modifications is a Pack by Maplebell. Adding a total of 13 new traits to choose from, I love the selection here, particularly the Unconventional trait, as Sims with that particular one "don't conform to societal norms", making it perfect for storytelling and Sims on particular journeys outside of what that may be (though in The Sims 4 where we have Spellcasters, Werewolves, and Vampires, who's to say, really.

These can be downloaded in one big file or individually as well so you don't have to add ones you're not interested in, ranging from the previously mentioned Unconventional to Minimalist and Chatty.

#11 - Child Exclusive Traits

Image of a child Sim in CAS and a list of traits

Second up is this mod by Triplis, which adds eight new traits to The Sims 4 that are designed specifically for Child Sims, and are an evolution of the current toddler traits in-game.

For example, the 'Tattletale' mod trait is an evolution of EA's 'Angelic' Toddler trait, adding a new Mean interaction, Tell On, which causes the told-on Sim to be scolded and gain an angry moodlet. All of these traits are as follows:

  • Bold
  • Gigglemeister
  • Fretful
  • Rocket
  • Sensitive
  • Sleuth
  • Sweetie
  • Tattletale

If you enjoy these traits, Triplis has another mod that evolves these traits for Teen Sims too, meaning that you can select the corresponding trait to follow them through their ageing process.

#10 - Hide or Reveal Pet Quirks!

Image of a Pet's Simology window showing Quirk traits

With The Sims 4: Cats and Dogs Expansion, Pet Sims can get randomised 'Quirks', which are essentially behavioural traits that affect how they interact with certain objects and activities.

These fall into 'afraid' or 'obsessed' categories, and they'll develop a positive obsession with something or become afraid of something in the home and will negatively react to it, like a microwave or the doorbell.

The thing about these Quirks, though, is that they are hidden from view. With the Hide or Reveal Pet Quirks mod by Spazmunki13, these are revealed.

Personally, I find this mod is best used when paired with the Playable Pets mod, as you can then click on a Pet and navigate to their Simology panel (shown in the image above) to view all of their Quirks alongside the typical traits you can choose for them.

#9 - Pastry Lover Trait

Image of a pie menu in The Sims 4

Ah, yes, the millennial urge to go outside and spend your hard-earned cash on a pastry or other little treat. Can't you just smell the upcoming weekend and the waft of a gorgeous pain au chocolat?

If I were a Sim (and I have a Simself, so I suppose that statement is true in some regard), I'd want everyone to know my love of all things baked and delicious - and with this mod by Caradriel, you can do just that.

Introducing the Pastry Lover trait, which lets Sims do everything from ask about another's favourite cake to the above pictured event of a cake decorating class - you can even take part in a baking TV show if you so choose.

What I really like about this mod is that Caradriel has grouped all of the trait's related interactions under a 'Baking Lover' option when clicking on yourself and other Sims, so you know exactly where to find those related interactions.

#8 - Dungeons & Dragons Races as Traits

Image of the Dungeons & Dragons Races as Traits mod in The Sims 4

This mod may be a little niche, but if you're a fan of games like Baldur's Gate 3, Dungeons & Dragons itself, or even something like a high-fantasy novel you're currently reading, you'll likely love adding this one to your game.

The Dungeons & Dragons Races as Traits mod by Emoria adds 13 traits to The Sims 4 under the 'Lifestyle' section, representing races included in the fifth edition of DnD

For example, assigning the Dwarf trait to a Sim will reward them with a bonus for their Handiness and Fitness skills, a night vision buff, and a special Dwarven greeting. Sun Elves stop ageing when they become a Young Adult, also gaining an Elvish greeting and do not require sleep.

Races will also regard each other either negatively or positively depending on the stereotype, making it an interesting mod to download if you're interested in starting a fantasy-themed 'let's play'.

Emoria also has a mod that introduces the alignment system of DnD into The Sims 4 if you want to add further customisation to your game, ranging from Chaotic Good to Neutral Evil.

#7 - Inborn Personality

I always find it fascinating when thinking about the similar sorts of traits that people can inherit from their parents, and with this mod by Vicky Sims, you can carry that lineage on into The Sims 4.

Passing on traits to a Sim's offspring in the form of reward traits, Sims will have a 20% chance to get a reward version of a trait when only one of their parents has a trait they received in CAS. A higher, 40% chance is available when both parents have the same trait.

This is something I don't think I could be without in my game, particularly because it adds another layer of dynamism to the life sim.

#6 - Misery Traits

While the traits included in Misery Traits mod by NateTheL0ser are more negative - including Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Hay Fever traits amongst others - they add a lot of realism to The Sims 4, hence its popularity amongst the community - with almost 90,000 downloads.

The moodlets that the traits give also provide some interesting story scenarios. For example, a Child Sim born from Spellcasters that is allergic to magic. The 'Fame Jealous' trait is also a great option for players who have Get Famous installed and are bored of NPCs constantly fawning over celebrities and passing out.

There are even options for 'Allergic to Cats', 'Allergic to Dogs', and 'Hates Vampires' too.

#5 - Lot Traits

Now that we've run through a fair few different traits for Sims (and there's more to come, too), how about some love for all those places they can live and hang out?

I adore the Lot Trait and Challenge feature, it's something I regularly use and I find it great for creating an atmosphere and for storytelling purposes.

Another mod from VickySims (also known as Chingyu), this gives you 22 new Lot Traits or Challenges to play around with, from Airless - which decays a Sim's needs faster and gives them a higher chance of becoming Dazed - to 'Advanced' which provides a big boost to your Sims' needs with furniture.

#4 - The Sims 4 Royalty Mod

The Royalty Mod by llazyneiph is the answer for anyone who has a hankering to play The Sims Medieval again.

The mod adds the 'Monarch' trait to CAS, allowing a Sim to become a Monarch who can then give other Sims titles, attend court, and so much more, including:

  • A 'Missing Royal' Aspiration where your Sim discovers their secret inheritance
  • New class traits (Peasant, Middle class, Gentry) based on lot value, household funds, or both
  • Lot traits
  • New social events like coronations and royal audiences
  • Heirs to the throne
  • Royal Family Lore skill
  • New animations

The mod has seen a lot of popularity, with over 300,000 downloads on CurseForge, and is a brilliant little accompaniment if you're thinking of starting up the Disney Princess challenge.

#3 - Zodiac Signs Mod

Image showing zodiac signs in the reward shop of The Sims 4

Initially created by Radiophobe and adopted by modder Tralfaz482, this mod adds all the zodiac signs to the Aspiration rewards store (meaning that they don't take up a standard trait slot), with certain activities and hobbies being more suited to some signs over others. It also introduces compatibility with other signs too.

Whether you follow astrology or not, the added compatibility mechanic is an interesting addition that can be played alongside or instead of The Sims 4 Growing Together.

If you were a fan of zodiacs in The Sims 1, 2 or 3, this is one mod you'll definitely want to add to your save.

#2 - More CAS Traits mod: More Infant traits

Image of an Infant Sim with more trait slots

If you want more trait slots, you'll want to install the more CAS Traits mod by VickySims.

The mod essentially adds more slots for traits so you can assign more than the standard number. Crucially this also includes Infants who can now have two traits assigned to them.

There are a lot of options here for this, 30 in total, with each providing a varying number. The highest number of traits that can be added with the mod are:

  • 2 traits for Infants
  • 3 traits for Toddlers
  • 8 traits for Children
  • 10 traits for Teens
  • 13 traits for Young Adults
  • 15 traits for Adults
  • 13 traits for Elders

There are options for fewer slots too if you're looking to just add one or two slots per life stage. The mod also introduces more trait options, including more traits for Infants.

What is the best Sims 4 trait mod?

#1 - 100 Base Game Traits Pack

Image of the 100 Base Game traits mod shown in CAS

If you're looking for variety, you've found it. Vicky Sims has compiled a package of over one hundred different traits, each with distinct buffs and whims. The full table of traits can be found here and includes traits such as determined, eccentric, hyper, optimistic, shy, and slow-witted.

They're divided into the following categories:

  • Expressions in relationships
  • Stimulation and emotional response
  • Social image and behaviour
  • Subjective qualities of Sims' appearance
  • Talents and weaknesses

This mod is incredibly popular amongst the community and is currently the most downloaded trait mod in the CurseForge library with 447k downloads. There's a CAS version and a Reward trait version too for additional customisation options.

VickySims has plenty of other trait mods available on their site too, so I'd recommend looking through their catalogue to take this already incredible amount of traits even further.

How to install trait mods in The Sims 4

When downloading CC and mods make sure it's from a reputable source, such as CurseForge. I'd recommend you back up your save file by making a copy of the files found under 'Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\saves' and placing those copies somewhere safe -like your desktop - in case anything goes awry.

Once you've downloaded a mod via any of the links in this guide, make sure to copy the file from your downloads folder (some may require you to unzip it first), and place it into your mods folder, found on your system via this path: 'Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods'

Once pasted in your mods folder, to enable the mods in your game, follow these steps:

That's all you need to do! You'll now be able to enjoy all of these traits mods and the additional gameplay that they bring to your game.
