The ranking system in Rainbow Six Siege is quite complex for newcomers, with a number of different ranks to climb from Copper to Champions, and corresponding rewards that you can earn.

A competitive shooter having a ranked game mode is nothing new, but there are many intricacies in R6 Siege that separate it from the rest and make it a little tricky to get to grips with at first. The game does ease you in with its introductory game modes, but you really do need to understand ranked before you get started - especially if you're looking to climb as effectively as possible.

Thankfully, we've got everything you need to know right here, so continue reading to find out more about the Rainbow Six Siege ranking system and see all of the ranks that you can earn in the game right now.

Ranked is the main competitive game mode in Rainbow Six Siege, allowing players to test their ability against those that are of a similar skill level.

It has a different ruleset to both Standard and Quick Match, providing a longer experience with a number of exclusive features.

First and foremost, ranked play exclusively uses the Bomb game mode, featuring a best-of-six format that has each team play a side for three consecutive rounds. Overtime is extended to a best of three, ensuring that the best team always comes away with the victory.

There is also a ban phase for both maps and operators, allowing both teams to ban one map and two operators of their choice that will not be available for the match.

Each win and loss in ranked will affect your overall skill rating (otherwise known as MMR) for the season, allowing you to climb up or fall down the ranks depending on how well you are doing.

For me, ranked is the only game mode I play in Rainbow Six Siege, as it enables the ultra-competitive environment that the game truly thrives on. It has all of my favourite maps, operates with the best format, and I can't help but keep coming back to the thrill of climbing the ladder and seeing how far I can stretch my skills each season.

There are 36 ranks for you to climb through in Rainbow Six Siege across eight rank groups - giving you plenty to grind in your path towards Champions.

Here are all of the ranks in Rainbow Six Siege right now:

  • CopperĀ (V, IV, III, II, I)
  • Bronze (V, IV, III, II, I)
  • Silver (V, IV, III, II, I)
  • Gold (V, IV, III, II, I)
  • Platinum (V, IV, III, II, I)
  • Emerald (V, IV, III, II, I)
  • Diamond (V, IV, III, II, I)
  • Champions

The highest rank in Rainbow Six Siege is the Champions rank. Only the top players in the game will be good enough to reach Champions in the first place, using all of the best attackers and defenders in the game to overcome their opponents.

The ranking system in Rainbow Six Siege allows you to climb up through the 36 ranks within a timed season.

Your skill level in Rainbow Six Siege ranked is measured in two different ways:

  • Visible MMR that is gained and lost after every game, and reset at the end of each season
  • Hidden 'Skill' value that is based on historical data and continues between seasons

Improving your visible MMR is what will help you climb the ranks, as there's a new rank after every interval of 100, all the way up to Champions at the top. Your hidden 'Skill' value, however, dictates how good the game thinks you are, and determines your overall MMR gains and losses after every match.

As there are no more placements in ranked, it's now down to your 'Skill' value to help you quickly climb - if you're good enough, of course. As everyone's MMR begins at Copper 5 at the start of a new season, the game's way of getting you to your 'correct' rank is to increase your MMR gains after a win and decrease your losses after a defeat.

There is no guaranteed way to rank up fast in Rainbow Six Siege's ranked game mode, but the key is to improve your 'Skill' value by being 'better' in the game's eyes.

While kills are a big part of this, they certainly do not tell the whole story - as all manner of positive actions in Rainbow Six Siege play a role in improving your overall MMR gains. Ubisoft has not made it public knowledge what affects your 'Skill' value, but I have found that kills, assists, and any means of gaining points in-game have given me a boost to my MMR gains - alongside winning games, of course.

The best thing about having a good 'Skill' value is that it not only increases the amount of MMR you gain after a win, but it also decreases the MMR you lose after a defeat, meaning that ranking up is super easy even if you're at a 50% win rate. Going on a win streak is only going to have a positive effect, but with a good 'Skill' value you will continue to rise up the ranks even if you're not winning every game.
