Fusion is finally coming to Pokemon GO, allowing you to merge two separate Pokemon to create one powerful creature like Dusk Mane Necrozma or Dawn Wings Necrozma.

Over the years, Pokemon GO has gradually added mechanics from the mainline games like Mega Evolution and Primal Reversion. The next big addition to the mobile game will be Fusion, with the Legendary Necrozma able to merge with Solgaleo or Lunala.

When will Fusion be available in Pokemon GO?

The long-awaited Fusion mechanic will make its worldwide debut during the global Pokemon GO Fest 2024 event, which takes place from July 13 to July 14, 2024.

Trainers who attend the in-person Pokemon GO Fest 2024 events in Sendai (May 30 - June 2), Madrid (June 14 - 16), or New York City (July 5 - 7) will be able to catch Necrozma and use Fusion early.

Necrozma's two Fusions in Pokemon GO

How does Fusion work?

In order to use Fusion in Pokemon GO, you'll first need to own a Necrozma and either a Solgaleo or a Lunala. Tap on any Necrozma in your collection and you'll see options to fuse with one of those two Pokemon, alongside the requirements for doing so.

Fusion requires 30 Candy for both species of Pokemon that are being merged (in this case, 30 Necrozma Candy and 30 Cosmog Candy) as well as 1000 Fusion Energy. This is a new resource that can be earned by defeating Raid Bosses or completing certain Special Research quests.

Here are the two Fusion options available for Necrozma and the resources you'll need to unlock them:

Fusion Pokemon Required Cost
Dusk Mane Necrozma Necrozma & Solgaleo
  • 1000 Solar Fusion Energy
  • 30 Necrozma Candy
  • 30 Cosmog Candy
Dawn Wings Necrozma Necrozma & Lunala
  • 1000 Lunar Fusion Energy
  • 30 Necrozma Candy
  • 30 Cosmog Candy

You might have noticed that there are two types of Fusion Energy mentioned in the table above. Solar Fusion Energy is required to merge Necrozma and Solgaleo together, while Lunar Fusion Energy is required to merge Necrozma and Lunala together.

Solar Fusion Energy can be obtained by defeating Dusk Mane Necrozma in Raids, while Lunar Fusion Energy can be obtained by defeating Dawn Wings Necrozma in Raids. Both of these Pokemon will appear in 5-Star Raids during Pokemon GO Fest 2024.

There will also be a chance to earn Fusion Energy by completing a Special Research quest during the event.

The Fusion option in Pokemon GO

Once you've used Fusion on Necrozma and another Pokemon, it will remain in its new form until you separate them. Separating them doesn't cost any extra Fusion Energy or Candy and can be done whenever you like.

Which Pokemon can use Fusion?

Initially, only Necrozma, Solgaleo, and Lunala will be able to use Fusion in Pokemon GO, but there are some other creatures that have been known to display this phenomenon in the mainline Pokemon games.

In Pokemon Black & White, Kyurem could fuse with Reshiram to become White Kyurem or Zekrom to become Black Kyurem. Later, in Pokemon Sword & Shield, Calyrex could fuse with Glastrier to become Ice Rider Calyrex or Spectrier to become Shadow Rider Calyrex.

We'll likely see these Fusions added to Pokemon GO at some point in the future, but given how powerful they are, I wouldn't expect Niantic to rush them out. They'll probably be saved for big future events like GO Fest or GO Tour.

Interestingly, Necrozma also has a final form that can be obtained through Fusion called Ultra Necrozma. It seems this won't be available in Pokemon GO - at least not at the beginning - but it could be added later on.
