Blizzard awards players with a certain amount of Competitive Points per win in Overwatch 2, but the amount changes depending on whether you get a Win, Loss, or Draw.
What's more, the developer changed how Competitive Points work in Season 9, with Legacy Competitive Points now in the mix. Below, I've broken down what you need to know about the new Competitive Points system.
How many Competitive Points do you get per win?
Here is how many Competitive Points you earn per win, draw, or loss of a competitive match:
- Per Win: 10 CP
- Per Draw: 5 CP
- Per Loss: 0 CP
This amount has been lowered since preview seasons, but there's a new set of Competitive Challenges that can help increase your income of Competitive Points.
Every competitive match you play in Overwatch 2 now counts towards a Competitive Progression metre, which has 30 ticks:
- Wins award 3 ticks
- Draws and losses award 1 tick
Once your Competitive Progression meter reaches 30, you're awarded 100 CP and the metre resets.
This new system replaces the old one where players would be awarded a huge chunk of CP depending on their highest achieved rank during the Season. That system no longer exists, and the methods listed above are the only current ways to earn CP in Overwatch 2.
What can you spend Competitive Points on?
Competitive Points can only be spent on Jade weapons, which coat our heroes' armaments in a gorgeous shiny green colour. These can be purchased from the 'Heroes' menu, and by selecting the weapon slot at the bottom of the tab on the left.
You can check how many Competitive Points you currently have by looking in the top right corner beneath your player avatar. There, you'll see two icons: the red icon depicts how many Competitive Points you have, while the white icon denotes Legacy Competitive Points.
If you're wondering what on earth Legacy Competitive Points are, don't worry - so was I. Let's dig deeper into what these are, how to get them, and what you can spend them on.
What are Legacy Competitive Points?
Legacy Competitive Points are old Competitive Points from previous seasons that have been converted automatically. These can only be spent on Golden Weapon skins, meaning that the new Jade weapon skins can only be purchased with Competitive Points earned in the new season.
If you're looking to get more Legacy Competitive Points to purchase more Golden Weapons, then I'm afraid you're out of luck. At the moment, there's currently no way to earn additional Legacy Competitive Points.
Instead, you'll need to wait until the end of the 2024 competitive season. At the end of the year, Blizzard has said that it will once again convert any unspent Competitive Points into Legacy Competitive Points.
This is super frustrating for players like me who currently have 2,400 CP, but can't spend it on anything given that all Gold weapon skins cost 3,000 CP. I'll need to wait until January 2025 until I can buy another golden weapon.
Once the 2024 competitive season ends, the Gold and Jade weapon skins will rotate. You'll then be able to purchase Gold weapon skins with the normal currency, while Legacy Points will be reserved for Jade weapons.
