The original Overwatch was a paid title, but is Overwatch 2 free to play? Tracer and the gang are returning with Overwatch 2 on October 4, and players will be reintroduced to the sci-fi world that Blizzard created. However, is Overwatch 2 free to play, or will it be a premium product once more at full price? We have the answer covered for you here.
- Did you know the original Overwatch will stop working when OW2 is available?
Is Overwatch 2 Free To Play?
Overwatch 2 will be a free-to-play product when it releases on all current systems and PC on October 4. You'll be able to download the game and get going right away. However, something to keep in mind is that not all characters will be unlocked from the get-go, and loot boxes have entirely faded from existence.
Instead of the loot boxes comes seasonal battle passes. Content like new weapon charms, skins, and highlight intros will be locked behind it. It will work similarly to games like Fortnite and MultiVersus, where your experience will grow the battle pass' level. You can also gain progress on the reward path by completing daily and weekly challenges.
On the bright side, there will be two different routes in the battle pass: free and premium versions, so even if you can't afford the battle pass, you'll still receive some content. The new character of the season can be unlocked at Level 55 on the free path, so you'll still have a chance of getting a character like Kiriko. If you buy the premium version, you'll gain Kiriko immediately. Blizzard says to expect one new character per season.
- There will be cross-progression between all systems with Overwatch 2. Here's how to activate it.
What Does The Overwatch 2 Season Pass Include?
The first season of content includes a variety of unlockables for your money. According to Windows Central, there will be a 15% battle pass boost, one mythic skin, five legendary skins, two epic skins, four weapon charms, three emotes, three souvenirs, six poses, three play-of-the-game intros, eight-player icons, 11 voice lines, six name cards, and 12 sprays. Also, as previously mentioned, you'll gain Kiriko straight away in the first Season Pass. That routine of getting each new character immediately will likely continue in future season passes.
While it's a shame we don't get the character immediately while playing Overwatch 2 for free, it's nice to know exactly what we'll be getting for our money with the season pass rather than the randomness of the loot box in the first game. We'll also be getting Sojourn and Junker Queen for free during Season 1.
