Kameo Fighters are being introduced in Mortal Kombat 1 for the very first time, and for that reason, no one really knows what to expect.

Kameo fighters being introduced into the game offers a fresh take on the fighting, allowing them to intervene throughout the fight and boost the amount of movement available to the player. So far, they look akin to how assists worked in Marvel vs. Capcom.

From a storytelling perspective, it may allow for some of the less popular or important characters to get a bit more screen time throughout the game's story, without having to be a completely playable character.

So, for a rundown of just what these Kameo Fighters will do in Mortal Kombat 1 and which ones will be available, read on.

What do Kameo Fighters perform in Mortal Kombat 1?

Reptile, Baraka and Kung lao in Mortal Kombat 1

Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1 is a new partner-based assist mechanic that will likely step up battles in the game. The official Q&A says they give "expanded gameplay possibilities for players." However, they won't be playable. "These characters are chosen separately from the main roster of fighters," says publisher WB Games.

These Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1 should work like assist characters in Marvel vs. Capcom and Dragon Ball FighterZ. In the past, this type of mechanic extended combos or gave you defensive support - projectiles could also be thrown!

However, most fighting games don't provide strictly support characters, so it will be interesting to see how nuanced this mechanic will be.

Which Kameo Fighters are in Mortal Kombat 1?

With Kameo Fighters serving as assists for the main crew, they will likely be characters that are lower on the totem pole overall. So far, only a few have been announced so far:

  • Cyrax
  • Darrius
  • Frost
  • Goro
  • Jax Briggs
  • Kano
  • Kung Lao
  • Sektor
  • Scorpion
  • Sonya Blade
  • Stryker
  • Sub-Zero
  • Sareena

It was also confirmed that players can use the standard fighters as Kameo Fighters too.

We know that some Kameo Fighters will be available through DLC. The first Kombat Pack has now been announced and will allow players to use Omni-Man, Homelander, Peacemaker, Ermac, Quan Chi and Takeda. So these should be added as Kameo fighters later down the line too.

So, that's everything we know about Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1. If you can't wait for the next iteration of the popular fighting game, then be sure to take a look at our Mortal Kombat 1 homepage for everything else we know about the game.
