How To Get Oil In ARK Survival Evolved

Oil is a resource that can both be gathered and produced, but we'll cover how to gather it first. Oil can be harvested from Dark Stones, which spawn near oil patches in the ocean, inside underwater caves, and on in the Snow Biome along the shore and on icebergs. Dark Stone stands out from standard stones due to its shade, and finding them in the ocean is pretty simple, as you can see streams of Oil coming toward the surface, but it's also worth noting that many dangerous creatures lurk in the ocean.

You can mine Oil from Dark Stone with a Stone Pick or a Metal Pick, with the latter being far more efficient. However, the most effective way of gathering Oil is by using a tamed Dunkleosteus or Anklyosaurus, as they can get the most from each Dark Stone. You can also find smaller yields of Oil by killing Trilobites in shallow waters and searching the bodies of dead TEK creatures.

Producing Oil is another very useful method for making sure you have can repeatedly get lots of it, and let you spend more time gathering of resources. Dung Beetles are one of the best ways of doing this. You can find them in underground caves, and by feeding them their own faeces (disgusting, we know) they will passively generate Oil for you to gather. It's worth building a pen in these caves and escorting the Dung Beetles into it, so they don't wander around out.

If you find Hesperornis Eggs, these can be converted into Oil at Cooking Pots and Industrial Cookers, and lastly the Tusoteuthis can also passively produce Oil with no input needed, so it's worth taming a few of these to keep your reserves high.

That's all for our primer on how to get Oil in ARK Survival Evolved, and now you know what it's used for, along with different methods of gathering and producing Oil.
