Sleep mode is a new feature added to Fortnite that's causing frustration among the player base - so find out what exactly it does and how to disable it if it's annoying you.
What does sleep mode do?
Sleep mode essentially deactivates any performance-intensive parts of the game after you are inactive for at least 15 minutes.
This includes the disabling of voice chat, any on-screen graphics, and active matchmaking searches. Largely all that will be left is the message on the screen saying that you're in sleep mode, but once you reactivate the game you won't have to go through the trouble of loading everything up or logging in.
It is, in premise, a forced energy-saving mode for the game, ensuring that you're not wasting anything unnecessarily if you leave the game for too long. It won't be too long after that your console or PC will likely enter sleep mode too, which will save you even more in the long run.
How to turn off sleep mode
Deactivating sleep mode once you've entered it simply requires you to press any key on PC or any button on your controller if you're playing on console.
If you want to turn it off altogether though you'll want to head into the game's settings, navigate to the 'Energy Saving' section, and then locate the 'Activate Sleep Mode after' option. You'll then want to set this to 'Never', after which your game won't enter sleep mode again regardless of how long you're inactive for.
As you'll likely notice in this setting you can also change the length of time you have to spend inactive before sleep mode activates, giving you the option for 5, 10, 15, 30, and 60 minutes. It's set by default to be 15 minutes, but I'd maybe recommend bumping it up to 60 as you're not likely to be inactive for an entire hour but it's there as a safeguard just in case.
