Things look to be opening up in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, leading many players to wonder whether the game will fully embrace an open world setting as opposed to the more linear structure of Remake.

There are countless mini-games to uncover in the game, including the extensive Queen's Blood that we detailed in our preview, alongside many of the original game's most memorable locations - so being able to explore them at your own pace would definitely be a welcome feature.

Will Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have an open world?

While it won't have an open world in the traditional sense, where the map is fully explorable from the moment you start the game, Final Fantasy 7 Remake has plenty of areas that you can freely explore in an open manner, and lets you return to any area once you have visited it.

We have seen from various trailers and experienced in our own previews that not only are the various towns vastly expanded upon compared to the original game, but there's so much to find and explore within the world outside of these towns - with plenty of side quests to tackle too.

Areas like Costa del Sol, Kalm, and Junon will be much grander and give each player the freedom to move through them as they please and at their own pace. Maps were shown in the dedicated State of Play, for example, with unexplored areas greyed out - almost begging to be seen!

We are yet to uncover the full scale of what is explorable within Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but it is certainly much more open than both the original 1997 experience and the first game in the Remake trilogy that came before it.
