The Elden Ring Ranni quest is one of the longest side quests in the entire game, allowing you access to a series of new areas and even an alternate ending. Many of the quests in Elden Ring are fairly cryptic and hard to follow, but they will give you the chance to gain some powerful gear. If you want to know how to finish the Elden Ring Ranni quest and earn the Dark Moon Greatsword, we've got you covered.
- Before tackling this quest you need to get yourself to Liurnia, and defeating Godrick is a good way to prepare yourself for that. For tips, check out Elden Ring Godrick Boss Fight: How To Beat Godrick The Grafted.
Elden Ring Ranni Quest: Where To Begin
Many of the stories of Elden Ring intertwine, and none more so than the stories of Blaidd and Ranni. Blaidd is a half-wolf warrior that the player can encounter early on in the Mistwood. His story ties directly to Ranni as he is in her service. For more on this, check out our Elden Ring Blaidd guide to complete his quest.
As part of Blaidd’s quest you will meet Ranni, but in truth, you may have met Ranni before. Early in the game, if you go to the Church of Elleh at night, you can meet Renna the Witch. She is the one who gives you the ability to summon spirit ashes. Renna, shock and surprise, is actually Ranni in disguise.
- Ranni's quest involves beating several of the main bosses in the game and getting their Great Runes. For more on that, check out Elden Ring Rune Arcs: Where To Get Them And How To Use Them.
Elden Ring Ranni Quest: Helping Blaidd
As in the guide mentioned above, you need to aid Blaidd in his goals. Doing this will bring you to the Elden Ring Radahn Boss Fight. Once Radahn is defeated, a meteor will crash to the earth. This is our next destination, so head to east Limgrave. The closest site of grace is the one at Fort Haight. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see hundreds of rocks floating in the air.
Below the floating rocks is a huge crater. Make your way down into the crater and you will emerge into Nokron, The Eternal City. Nokron is a large region, and for this step you need to make it to a large church. To get here, you should check out Elden Ring Mimic Tear to get where you need to be, while also grabbing yourself the most powerful spirit ash in the game.
In the church where you get the Mimic Tear, drop down to the lower area and head out the door. Go to the right and grab the site of grace. From there, head north up the street. At the top of the street, open the chest to get the Fingerslayer Blade.
- For this next step, you will need to have beaten Rennala in Raya Lucaria. For some helpful advice on how to do so, here's Elden Ring Rennala Boss Fight: How to Beat Rennala, Queen of the Moon.
Elden Ring Ranni Quest: Ranni’s Journey
Now, you need to head back to Ranni at her tower. Give her the Fingerslayer Blade and she will thank you for your service to her. She gives you the key to accessing the tower in the east of Liurnia, the place you need to go to activate Rennala’s Great Rune. She then disappears, but we are not finished yet.
Head back outside and to the final tower of the Three Sisters, Renna’s Rise. Use the teleporter there to find yourself at Ainsel River. Ahead of you will be an item in a coffin, pick it up. This is the Miniature Ranni Doll. Sit at a site of grace and you will be able to talk to the doll. Speak to it repeatedly to get all the information, and begin the next stage of the quest.
Ranni will tell you the truth of her story, no spoilers here, but what you must do next is defeat an assassin. Make your way forward, from the Nokstella Waterfall Basin you will see a tunnel ahead. Go through it and fight the Baleful Shadow. After this, Ranni will reward you with a Palace Key. Take the key to Renalla’s boss room and use it to open the chest behind her. You will find the Dark Moon Ring inside. You cannot use it right away, but head back to where you fought the Baleful Shadow and progress forward to the Lake of Rot.
- This section is best done with a lot of vigour and endurance. If you haven't got much and want to alter your stats, you can with Elden Ring Larval Tears: How To Respec Your Character.
Elden Ring Ranni Quest: Lake Of Rot And The Moonlight Altar
The Lake of Rot is just as pleasant as it sounds but unfortunately, we do need to be here. More specifically we need to cross the lake. From where you come in, you need to head to the opposite end. Standing in the lake will fill your Crimson Rot meter, stay in it too long and you will be poisoned by it. Stock up on healing items, make yourself as resistant as you can, just focus on survival and crossing the lake.
Once you get across, you will find some stone coffins. Interact with one of them to enter it and be brought to the next area. Here you will find Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. You’re going to have to defeat this particularly nasty boss in order to progress. Once it is defeated, use the Dark Moon Ring to exit at the other end of the cave. Ride the elevator up to the Moonlight Altar. This is the area high up above Liurnia in the southwest corner, above the Albinaurics.

Elden Ring Ranni Quest: Tying Loose Ends
At this point, we are all but finished. When you reach the Moonlight Altar, go up the hill to the Cathedral of Manus Celes. Go down through the hole in the ground and you will find Ranni. Give her the Dark Moon Ring and, for all intents and purposes, this is her quest complete. She will disappear and you can then grab the Moonlight Greatsword.
After this, go back to Ranni’s Rise. There will be someone waiting for you at her tower, and you have to fight them. Once they are defeated, go speak with Eiji the blacksmith. He is beside the road just southwest of Caria Manor, you likely met him on your way in. This completes the story of these characters, and leaves you with a whole bunch of powerful weapons and armour.
The only thing left to do is complete the game, and at the end of the game summon Ranni to get her ending. That choice we will leave to you, but regardless this is everything you need to know for Elden Ring Ranni: how to complete Ranni’s Quest and get the Moonlight Greatsword.
