You can unlock some incredibly strong Ultimate Skills for every Vocation by finding all of the Maister locations in Dragon's Dogma 2 -  but they are understandably rather hidden in the game's vast open world.

One of the biggest strengths of a Maister's teachings comes from the fact that you can equip the Ultimate Skill at any Vocation level, giving you some of the best Skills without having to level up at all or even spending any Dep.

Archer Maister location

Finding the Archer Maister and unlocking the Vocation's Ultimate Skill requires you to complete both Gift of the Bow and A Trial of Archery in order to meet Taliesin in Sacred Arbor.

You'll need to meet Glyndwr in Vernworth by the weapon shop and purchase a human-crafted bow for him. He'll then ask you to meet him in the Malachite Forest to practice his skills. Once you've done this, head back to the same spot in Vernworth and meet him again to start the 'A Trial of Archery' quest, which will lead you to save his sister from an Ogre.

Once this has been completed you'll be able to speak to Taliesin in Sacred Arbor to unlock the Heavenly Shot Ultimate Skill, which fires a shot that has its damage measured by the amount of stamina you have when fired.

Fighter Maister location

Lennart, found in Melve, is the Maister for the Fighter Vocation - although you will have to do much more than just meet him to get the Ultimate Skill.

You'll recognise him from early on in the main story, as he is the one who actually informs you about Maisters themselves on your first visit to the dragon-felled town. Encountering him as a Maister, however, requires a fairly long chain of quests, and is technically missable if you don't complete it before the Coronation.

You'll want to make sure that you return to Melve shortly after starting the Seat of the Sovran quests so that you'll encounter the Dragon attacking the town. Doing so will unlock Ulrika's questline - 'Readvent of Calamity' - which requires you to find her in Harve Village.

Once you've done that and completed the quest, head back to Ulrika's house in Melve and you'll find Lennart waiting there with Riotous Fury: the Fighter Vocation's Ultimate Skill.

This sends a flurry of attacks onto a single enemy that deals massive damage, but it does come at the cost of Stamina and leaves you incredibly exposed if you miss the first hit.

Thief Maister locations

Unlike most other Vocations, the Thief actually has two separate Maisters - each with their own Ultimate Skill - but thankfully they are both found in the same place. In the Nameless Village you'll be able to speak to both Flaude and Srail, with the former being a 'fake' Maister of sorts to trick the player.

You needn't complete any quests as a prerequisite for unlocking either Maister, although reaching Srail is somewhat of an ordeal if you aren't skilled in the art of platforming.

Flaude can be easily found in the manor house at the top of the Nameless Village, which is on the eastern edge of Vermund, and you'll likely head there to investigate the fake Sovren's origins.

He will give you the Blades of the Pyre Ultimate Ability, which sets off a fiery explosion that ignites not only any nearby enemies but also yourself. This, as you can imagine, is quite chaotic and doesn't always go well, so it doesn't quite work its way into the best Thief build.

Srail, on the other hand, is found within the Thieves Guild underneath the manor, which can be accessed by a tunnel just to the south. You will need to navigate across some tricky seesaw-type planks and avoid the odd swinging obstruction, but reaching the end will grant you the Formless Feint Ultimate Skill. This lets you avoid any incoming damage while active, which is incredibly strong and never not useful in a fight.

Mage Maister location

Eini is the Maister for the Mage Vocation, and she can be found in her home just to the north of Melve. To activate her as a Maister though and receive the Celestian Paean Ultimate Skill, you'll need to complete the 'Spellbound' quest given by her granddaughter Trysha.

This can be started by talking to Trysha once she is the only one left in the house, which is typically in the morning. She'll ask you to find five Grimoires across Vernworth. Once you've handed them over you'll have to rest for a few days and then return to Eini's house. Trysha should then be in an uncontrollable frenzy, in which you'll have to tire her out by avoiding her spells. Once she's calmed down, speak to Eini and she'll give you the scroll for the Ultimate Spell.

One thing to note is that completing this quest will lock you out of the Sorcerer's Appraisal quest given by Myrddin in the Checkpoint Rest Town, as they both require the same books. You can create forgeries of all five though, so make sure to do that if you wish to complete both - although you must give Trysha the real Grimoires for the quest to progress.

The Celestian Paean skill speeds up stamina recovery and movement speed, while also reducing damage taken to anyone who comes in contact with the spell - but it will drain your stamina and stun you as a result.

Sorcerer Maister locations

Much like the the Thief, the Sorcerer also has two Ultimate Skills - but both are tied to the Grimoire/Spellbound/Sorcerer's Appraisal quests so you'll have to engage in some forgeries if you want to get them all.

The first is given by Trysha after you have completed the Spellbound quest as listed above, so all you need to do there is speak to her and she'll hand over the Meteoron Ultimate Skill. This spell summons a deadly meteor shower, dealing massive damage in an AoE fashion.

The other Ultimate Skill is given by Myrddin after completing the Sorcerer's Appraisal quest in the Checkpoint Rest Town. You'll want to give the forged copies of the five Grimoires to her, and then she'll give you the Maelstrom Ultimate Skill in return. This creates a whirlwind-type environmental attack, whisking all enemies up into its gust for massive damage.

Warrior Maister location

While Beren is the Maister of the Warrior Vocation, and you can eventually find him at his home just beyond the border gate of the Checkpoint Rest Town, you will need to complete his two quests first in order for him to end up there.

You'll first find him in Moonglow Garden, which is just to the north of Melve and roughly along the path that you'll take when doing the 'Brothers Brave and Timid' quest. He will only be there at night though, so make sure to rest at the nearby campsite. Complete his three objectives - making sure to throw him out of the arena when fighting him - then rest once more.

Return back to Moonglow Garden and he'll be there once more with the 'Beren's Final Test' quest, asking you for help to defeat a Cyclops. Once you've bested the beast, rest once more and return to Beren again to complete the quest - with a nice big sword as a reward!

Beren will now finally travel to his home, so head over there once you've got the pass and speak to him to get the Arc of Might Ultimate Ability. This consumes your entire stamina to pull off a single powerful hit, dealing an incredible amount of damage.

Trickster Maister location

Getting the Ultimate Skill for the Trickster is perhaps the easiest of the lot, as it's right by where you'll find the Vocation in the first place. Once you've spoken to the ghostly Luz at the Reverent Shrine in Battahl, head up the ladder outside the shrine and jump up onto the roof.

You'll then see Luz in physical form standing up there, and all you need to do now is speak to her to unlock the Tricker Ultimate Skill Dragon's Delusion. This creates a smoke illusion of a giant dragon which, while dealing no damage, causes enemies to run and even trip in fear.

Mystic Spearhand Maister location

After unlocking the Mystic Spearhand Vocation from Sigurd, head over to Harve Village and visit his home to receive the Wild Furie Ultimate Skill.

This lets you chain together a near-limitless number of attacks until your stamina runs out, which can be great for staggering foes although it isn't the strongest overall.

Magick Archer Maister location

In a pattern, you will see emerging with many of the optional Vocations, unlocking the Ultimate Skill for the Magick Archer requires you to simply get the Vocation and speak to the Maister Cliodhna by the Hot Springs in the Volcanic Islands Camp afterwards.

Image of Gautstafr's location in Dragon's Dogma 2

She is the one that gives you the Vocation so it's impossible to miss, but you will need to complete 'Put a Spring in Thy Step' with Gautstafr beforehand - which also unlocks the ever-powerful Dwarven smithing style.

The Ultimate Skill in question is Martyr's Bolt, which fires a charged arrow that temporarily reduces your max HP the longer that it is charged. This is perhaps one of the strongest abilities in the game, but it can also kill you if you're not careful!

Warfarer Maister location

Finally, the Warfarer's Ultimate Skill is unlocked straight after you're given the Vocation itself, so make sure to speak to Lamond again in the Volcanic Island Camp and he will give you the Rearmament Ultimate Skill.

This, unlike the others, is just the core focus of the Warfarer class and allows you to switch between all of the different weapons and armours as the Vocation allows. This is due to the fact that the Warfarer doesn't technically have any skills beyond those equipped for each individual Vocation, so there's nothing to add on top of that.

All Ultimate Skills in Dragon's Dogma 2

  • Heavenly Shot (Archer)
  • Riotous Fury (Fighter)
  • Celestial Paean (Mage)
  • Blades of the Pyre (Thief)
  • Formless Feint (Thief)
  • Meteoron (Sorcerer)
  • Maelstrom (Sorcerer)
  • Arc of Might (Warrior)
  • Dragon's Delusion (Trickster)
  • Wild Furie (Mystic Spearhand)
  • Martyr's Bolt (Magick Archer)
  • Rearmament (Warfarer)

Not all Ultimate Skills are created equal though, so make sure to find out what the best options are below, alongside my own personal tier list breaking down the strength of each one.

Best Ultimate Skills & tier list

  • Celestial Paean (Mage)
  • Formless Feint (Thief)
  • Meteoron (Sorcerer)
  • Maelstrom (Sorcerer)
  • Martyr's Bolt (Magick Archer)

I'd personally argue that Martyr's Bolt is the best Ultimate Skill in the game, and it's handy because it's for the Magick Archer which is in my eyes the best Vocation you can choose too! Its strength is overwhelming, and it can genuinely one-shot most bosses in the game if used correctly.

It does come with the risk of death - but the Vocation allows you to play at a safe distance and I often found myself able to avoid all damage when positioned correctly as the Magick Archer anyway, so the downside was largely negated.

If you want to see how every Ultimate Skill stacks up though you need only peer down at my personal tier list:

Tier Ultimate Skills
S Martyr's Bolt (Magick Archer), Formless Feint (Thief)
A Celestial Paean (Mage), Meteoron (Sorcerer), Maelstrom (Sorcerer)
B Riotous Fury (Fighter), Arc of Might (Warrior), Rearmament (Warfarer)
C Heavenly Shot (Archer), Blades of the Pyre (Thief), Dragon's Delusion (Trickster)
D Wild Furie (Mystic Spearhand)

This, of course, isn't a measure of the Vocations themselves - but you're just sometimes better off using standard Weapon Skills instead of these special abilities despite how difficult some are to find.
