How to cross water safely in Dragon's Dogma 2

Crossing water in Dragon's Dogma 2 is a dangerous affair, but it doesn't have to be with these tips I regularly use to avoid sinking into the drink.

Getting across water safely in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is no easy feat, given the nasty Brine lurks in anything deeper than a puddle, ready to gobble you up.

In the opening scenes of Capcom’s latest RPG, you’re shown that water isn’t safe in this fantasy world, with your fellow escapee prisoner finding their demise in a mix of bubbles and red tentacles. Thankfully, there are a couple of methods you can use to get across small bodies of water should you need to on your travels in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Cross water using the Mage’s Levitate skill

The more surefire way to get across small amounts of water is by using the Levitate skill for the Mage vocation. This sees the player rise up into the air for around four seconds, letting you traverse things like ponds, streams, and small rivers.

To get the Levitate skill, you’ll need to either choose Mage as your starting vocation, or unlock it at any Vocation Guild for 100 Discipline, and then level up the class until you’re able to buy and equip the Levitate skill.

Once you’ve got the skill equipped, simply use it when you approach the water you wish to traverse and you’ll sail across it with no bother. Just be sure to judge the distances correctly - I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve died while being a bit too ambitious with my water crossings!

Frigor is a good alternative to cross water with

If Levitating isn’t your vibe, you can also fall back on the Frigor spell, also for the Mage vocation. This spell causes a staircase of ice shards to appear in front of you and can provide either a platform to traverse water with or a higher vantage point to jump from.

You can purchase Frigor as a skill from the Vocation Guild the same way that you purchase Levitation. If you don’t see it in the shop menu yet, level up your character a bit more and come back later.

Personally, I prefer to use Levitation to cross water, as it’s far more reliable than Frigor. On several occasions, I’ve had the ice staircase sink beneath the surface of the water if it’s deeper than I had initially thought, resulting in my timely and watery demise.

When in doubt, look around!

If you’re not up for switching Vocations every time you want to cross water, then you’re a little bit out of luck. The only alternative that I’ve found so far is to keep exploring the world and hope that I come across some sort of water crossing either up or downstream.

Often, you’ll find that if you walk a little way up or down a river bank, you’ll soon come across a bridge that can be used to traverse the water safely. That said, this isn’t always the case - I’ve seen plenty of chests on small islands that are just out of reach. In these instances, it’s best to remember where the location is on your map and return later with the Mage vocation equipped.
