A short while into your journey in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you’ll come across a soldier named Gregor who asks if you want to accompany him to the Capital. Like most good RPGs, you’re given a choice - either hop into the back of his Oxcart, or make the journey to Vernworth by yourself.

It’s completely up to you which option you choose, but I reckon the best choice is to accompany Gregor to the Capital. Here’s what happens depending on which option you choose.

What happens when you accompany Gregor to the Capital?

The reason I think you should accompany Gregor to Vernworth is because it essentially fast travels you to the Capital city almost immediately. This means you can continue the main story much more quickly, getting access to things like vendors and the Vocation Guild much sooner.

If you choose to accompany Gregor to Vernworth, you’ll be asked to jump in the back of the Oxcart for the trip. To do this, walk into the cart, sit down, and then press the button prompt to doze off.

You might be awoken by a Goblin ambush in the middle of the journey, but I found them to be super easy to defeat, and the whole affair was over rather quickly. After that, you can return to dozing off in the carriage before a cutscene triggers.

As you can see from the screenshot above, it’s a fair old trek from where Gregor invites you to join him and the main city of Vernworth. If you chose to go your own way, you’d need to walk that entire way yourself, which would likely take a good while with your under-levelled equipment and skills.

What if you make your own way to the Capital?

Of course, you’re totally within your rights to make your own way to Vernworth if you desire. After all, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is at its best when you give yourself up to the world and let it take you on the adventure it carves out for you.

As you might expect, if you choose to go your own way from Gregor, you’ll need to walk the whole way to the Capital yourself. There is a fast travel system in the game, but you won't have the right items to make use of it at this stage.

Likewise, you don’t really need to go straight to the Capital at all. You’re welcome to explore the world of Dragon’s Dogma a little more and see what secrets you can uncover.

That said, you’ll find plenty of skill, weapon, and armour upgrades waiting for you in Vernworth - not to mention plenty of quests to start. As such, it’s certainly worth putting the Capital high up on your to-do list when first starting out in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and accompanying Gregor is the best way to do that quickly.
