Diablo 4 allows you to add gems to add awesome status effects to your gear and weapons, however, once they're placed into each socket, they're stuck in the weapon.

It's fairly annoying if you find a better gem in your journey - but thankfully there's a way to unsocket gems in-game - you just need to go to a specific place to do it.

Where can you unsocket gems?

To unsocket gems, get to Level 20 (which you can reach by levelling up fast). Once you've reached that requirement, a mission called "Gem Crafting" will pop up. Finish it, and then you'll be able to access Jewelers in big cities throughout the open world. They're indicated on the map with a gem symbol.

Speak to any Jeweler and shift the tab over to the "Unsocket" section with the R2 or RT button. Now, select the equipment you want to unsocket gems from. Keep in mind that there's a cost to each operation, for example, with my Scowling Wrath Rare Helm, there's an unsocket cost of 4,726 Gold.

What else can the Jeweler do?

The Jeweler does more than unsocket gems in Diablo 4, as they can also add sockets to a weapon, ring, or equipment piece. This means you can use the gems you've collected to gain additional stat bonuses. It is costly, however, as to add a socket to a Level 19 Antique Downfall Rare Ring, I needed 13,989 Gold and one Scattered Prism. The latter can be obtained from defeated world bosses.

Additionally, you can craft gems with the Jeweler. As you explore Diablo 4's world, you'll gain crude crystals like Crude Amethyst. You'll need three to make a Chipped Amethyst that can be added to your weapons and gear, and it will cost around 4,500 Gold to perform this task with the Jeweler.

Lastly, you can upgrade accessories like Amulets and Rings to improve the stat boosts they offer. For example, my Gale Star can be upgraded with 1% more Resistance to all elements, a further 3.4% damage reduction from distant enemies, and 2.1% less Spirit Cost Reduction. A level one upgrade costs a mere 800 Gold and five Iron Chunks - not too bad in the grand scheme of things!
