Blizzard are well known for their giant MMO World of Warcraft, but is Diablo 4 also an MMO? It certainly has some of the same features, but is that enough?
Is Diablo 4 an MMO?
Simply put, Diablo 4 is not an MMO, but it does contain some MMO features and aspects, which is where some players are getting confused about the title.
For those who are unaware, MMO stands for massively multiplayer online. This is a genre of gaming where servers can host hundreds of players and there is a priority on social features and facilitating social interaction, ranging from completing quests together, to setting up guilds for players to join together.
There are many types of MMO games, with World of Warcraft being the best-known example of the genre. Despite the fact that Diablo 4 is not officially an MMO, it does contain some of the social features that characterise most MMO games.
For example, when exploring the Diablo 4 open world, you can occasionally run into other players undergoing their own journey. There are also events like world bosses that can pop up, attracting nearby players to work together and take the boss down.
However, what sets Diablo 4 apart from a typical MMO, is that key moments and dungeons are private for the player and their party, and all social aspects that involve other players are completely optional.
That's all for our answer to the question - is Diablo 4 an MMO? Now you know that it contains some MMO features, but it isn't strictly an MMO in the traditional sense.
