How Long To Beat
The system of Runewords in Diablo 4 is a returning system from the second game, giving you greater power of spells and effects you can make use of during combat. Here's a breakdown of the ins and outs of the system, along with all the available Runewords.
Runewords system explained
Runes
Runes are socketable items you can use to create Runewords; these are a system of cause and effect spells, where you can use a Rune of Ritual (cause) to meet a criterion in combat, and a Rune of Invocation (effect) to gain a benefit.
For example, the Yax Rune of Ritual is "Drinking a Healing Potion", and the Jah Rune of Invocation is "Replace your next Evade with the Sorcerer's Teleport". This means if you drink a Healing Potion and then Evade, it will let you Teleport instead.
Offering
Another key part of this system is Offering. Each Rune of Ritual has a requirement in its description that rewards you a set amount of Offering, while the Rune of Invocation can be used by spending a specific amount of Offering.
If you have double the Offering needed to use a Rune of Invocation, you'll trigger the Overflow mechanic for some Runes, which adds another benefit or effect to the spell.
Class mixing
Runewords let you use the abilities of different classes, such as the example above, which would allow a Barbarian or Rogue to use the Sorcerer's Teleport ability.
This gives you the chance to mix and match spells to unlock unique playstyles for your class, so experiment a little with them to find the best effects for you.
How to get Runes
Runes are found as drops throughout Sanctuary, with better quality ones more likely to drop on higher difficulties.
You can also craft them though. If you have three of the same Rune, you can craft a new one at the Jeweller. There is also a chance they'll form a Rune of the next rarity level.
