The classic DualSense PlayStation controller is still a valid option in many ways, but if you're looking to push your console gaming just that extra bit further, there are plenty of options I recommend for all your gaming needs.
Regardless of whether you want to hop into a great free-to-play shooter with a controller perfect for that style of play or are just looking for a little more customisation on the whole, there are loads of different models out there - so here's my top picks.
Editor's Note:
Updated on May 20 to adjust prices.
I've compiled a list of PS5 controllers that offer more customisation options for players who are looking for comfort during long hours of gaming, or for gamers looking to optimise their setups for specific genres.
Whilst you will receive the classic DualSense controller with your PS5 console out of the box, you may be looking for something a little different visually, or even something to enhance your playtime. For example, I enjoy lots of fighting games, so getting a controller designed for that works much better than the default.
The DualSense is a good option if you're on a budget, but if you have more to invest, you can treat yourself to one of the options below.
PlayStation DualSense Edge Wireless Controller
The original DualSense is a solid option for a reason, and the DualSense Edge takes it even further.
The controller is kitted out with the following features:
- Replaceable stick modules and stick caps, so you can personalise it to a grip of your liking
- Adjustable trigger lengths, meaning you're able to change the distance you have to push the trigger down directly from the back of the controller
- A USB lock which locks the cable into place when connected to avoid slipping when charging and gaming at the same time
- Lastly, it also features mappable back buttons for further customisation which can also be swapped out, making this a great contender for one of the best PS5 controllers on the market
Razer Wolverine V2 Pro
The Razer Wolverine V2 Pro is one PS5 controller that's built with customisation in mind, but it's at the higher end of other controllers included on our list.
Whether you're playing Street Fighter 6 or Call of Duty, the Razer Wolverine V2 controller can be customised in several ways, making it an appealing choice for gamers who play a variety of games and don’t want to shell out on multiple controllers.
The Razer Wolverine V2 has the following features:
- Interchangeable thumbsticks, one shorter and geared for speed the other longer and more suited to defensive positions for higher accuracy
- A multi-button display (remappable) with shorter actuation distances - meaning the buttons get pressed and respond quicker
- Adaptable trigger sensitivity: Longer or shorter pulls depending on the game preferences
- The D-pad is equipped with an 8-way microswitch making combos smoother
- Attractive lighting display which can be changed via the app
- The included app can save default preferences for every genre of game you log into
- Available in black or white
These features make the Razer Wolverine V2 a great high-end all-rounder option when on the market for a new PS5 controller.
PDP Victrix Pro BFG
Although the design of the Victrix Pro BFG may feel a little clunky to some, it is best used in competitive racing games, making this another standout choice.
Compatible across both PS4, PS5, and PC, the Victrix Pro BFG has the following features:
- Up to 20 hours of battery life
- Six microswitch buttons
- Swappable fight pad module
- Four mappable back buttons
- Clutch triggers for adaptable response
- Swappable analogue stick caps
These features, particularly the clutch triggers, make the Victrix Pro BFG controller particularly useful when playing racing or driving games like Rocket League.
HEXGAMING Rival Pro 4 Controller
HEXGAMING Rival Controllers are customisable in more than one way, featuring a host of different skins and grip options alongside various technical features including:
- Mappable rear buttons
- Eight different thumbstick options, featuring two different heights, and three ergonomic options
- Shorter trigger distance
- Rubberised grip
If you're looking to jazz up your playtime with something that both feels and looks great, then the HEXGAMING Rival Pro 4 Controller may be the one for you.
HORI Fighting Commander
The HORI Fighting Commander controller is, as the name suggests, made with fighting games in mind.
As such, it is kitted out with the following features:
- Improved ergonomics
- A six-button layout and a short throw analogue stick increases accuracy and speed, perfect for competitive fighting games
- Tournament-grade fightpad, with adjustable sensitivity and the option to lock it along with the option buttons (This helps prevent accidental button pressing when in the throes of combat)
The extended front button options lend themselves well to chaining combo attacks in quick succession, and the controller is officially licensed with Sony, so you should have no issue setting it up with your PS5.
The HORI Fighting Commander is a controller for serious gamers in mind and is a solid choice for any fighting game.
