You'd be cluckin' mad not to check out KFC's latest out-there collaboration, because it sounds like we're having chicken tonight in Hyrule. While KFC has had some weird and wonderful forays into gaming, like the bizarre concept of the KFConsole or a Final Fantasy crossover, it's now Zelda's time to shine.
Cooking was there in 2017's Breath of the Wild, but it was nothing compared to the charcuterie board of delights and recipes we could rustle up in Tears of the Kingdom. The likes of Biting meaty rice balls and Enduring fried wild greens had our mouths watering, but for some, we just want some simple fried chicken.
KFC and Zelda meet in 11 herbs and spices speedrun
Bringing two worlds together, the Zelda x KFC crossover introduces us to a speedrun that literally involves 11 herbs and spices. The challenge saw thousands of players from 17 countries try to recreate the infamous secret recipe in Tears of the Kingdom.
Following the discovery that you can cook up a storm with your own fried chicken in Tears of the Kingdom, the PR wizzes at KFC HQ wasted no time cashing in on the hype. After all, no one does chicken quite like Colonel Sanders. "The Recipe Rin" is reportedly the first brand-created speedrun.
Partnering with @SpeedrunEspanol, KFC asked wannabe Hylians to gather chicken, oil, and 11 herbs and spices from across Hyrule, putting them together for their own take on that famous fried chicken. The prize was a golden trophy shaped like a chicken thigh and worth a staggering € 11,000 (around $10k).
Who won the KFC x Zelda speedrun?
To join in, you had to show an empty inventory, travel to the Bedrock Bistro, and speak to Gomo the Goron. KFC affectionately referred to him as The Goronel. Although you could fast travel, you weren't allowed to buy any of the ingredients apart from the oil.
In the end, the winner was a French player called Keuss, who whipped up a bucket of fried chicken in just 1:07.800. We're not sure what they plan on doing with a $10k golden chicken thigh, but we don't imagine it's that easy to sell.
With everything from Burger King making you play Call of Duty to McDonald's and its Pokemon Happy Meals once again being scalped, video games and fast food giants are a supersized money-making opportunity. What's next, the Hamburglar stopping by as the Happy Mask Salesman?
