Despite the name of the Legend of Zelda series, Zelda has never once been a playable character in one of the main games.
Unless players want to jump into Super Smash Bros. or 2014’s Hyrule Warriors, there isn’t much scope to test out the princess’s skills.
Before The Game Awards, which took place last night, IGN sat down with the producer and the director of Tears of the Kingdom, and asked them whether or not there was any possibility of seeing a playable Zelda in the future.
Tears of the Kingdom developers say there may be scope for a playable Zelda in the future
While The Legend of Zelda is named after the princess, we have never been given the opportunity to play as her.
Instead many of the Zelda games are focussed on saving Zelda from peril.
In an interview with IGN, Tears of the Kingdom producer Eiji Aonuma and director Hidemaro Fujibayashi were asked about the potential to play as Zelda in the future.
Aonuma said: “Yeah, it is interesting when you think about the name of the series, the Legend of Zelda, but Link is always the main character.
“Link has been the main character, and Zelda has always been involved, and they have a relationship and their own rules in each of the games. But it is true that, I think there's always room for thinking about this type of thing and Zelda's role. And there may be some sort of possibility for something like that in the future.”
While it doesn't appear that anything is in the works at this moment in time, and neither developer gave an especially straight-forward answer, it would definitely be a fun twist on the usual Zelda game to be able to play as the princess of Hyrule.
IGN's interview with Aonuma and Fujibayashi took place just before The Game Awards, where The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was nominated for several awards.
While it did not win the Game of the Year award, it did take the prize for best "action/adventure" game, beating Alan Wake 2, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4, and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor.
