"I love this f**king Gun!" – Nikoli Belinski, Call of Duty: World at War.
It's been 15 years since the Ray Gun was first introduced in the Call of Duty series, as the Wonder Weapon erected from the mystery box in Nacht der Untoten.
But contrary to belief, the Ray Gun hasn't always been a Zombies-exclusive weapon and a whole decade-and-a-half down the line, World at War fans are only just figuring out a hidden Easter egg that brought the laser shooter to the trenches of the campaign.
World at War has a hidden Ray Gun Easter Egg
The Ray Gun's legacy starts with World at War, where Treyarch started the Zombies storyline and continued it through the entire Black Ops series - even ending up in Blackout.
But it also featured in the WaW campaign, thanks to an Easter egg from the Zombies creator Jesse Snyder.
The Easter egg takes place on the mission Little Resistance and involves jumping through a few puddles to bring up to four Wonder Weapons to the co-op campaign, and although players have found this in the past, many are just seeing for the first time as it was highlighted by CoD page "ModernWarzone".
Instantly, Snyder and the devs were praised by fans, who never knew the Ray Gun existed in lore outside of Zombies.
"The good ole days of games where devs would do this stuff was awesome," one popular comment read.
The type of players to find these Easter eggs have also been applauded alongside the developers, as who would think that splashing through puddles on the beach would bring up a Ray Gun?
"Watched my mom do this Easter egg and was SO CONFUSED and thought something was wrong with the game," a fan claimed.
Treyarch often loves to experiment with Easter eggs in Zombies, with Cold War bringing the coffin dance to Die Maschine, and there still being unsolved mysteries from maps dating back to 2015.
World at War dev reveals he was nearly fired for the Ray Gun Easter egg
Funnily enough though, the Ray Gun WaW Easter egg wasn't actually intended to be in the campaign, and it was only Jesse Snyder who snook the gun into Little Resistance, nearly losing his job for its sake.
Back in 2020, Snyder claimed, "Fun fact, I was almost fired for putting them in my level as an Easter Egg."
The legendary Zombies creator also said that the Ray Gun was only ever supposed to be a "cool addition" to Zombies after it was designed by Max Porter (hence, the pack-a-punched name of Porter's Mark II-V2 Ray Gun).
Yet the gun has a legacy stronger than any other weapon in Call of Duty, or even FPS games, and will likely continue to reign supreme in the series with Modern Warfare 3.
