The call is coming from inside the house, as it looks like a Scream game could be on the way from a pretty legendary gaming studio. 27 years after Ghostface first carved a legacy on the silver screen, the masked menace could be slashing their way into a new medium.
While it's true that Ghostface has popped up in Call of Duty, Dead by Daylight, and is rumoured for Mortal Kombat 1, the knife-wielding maniac has never truly held up a whole game of their own. After six movies (and a seventh on the way), it could finally be time for Ghostface to step out from the shadows.
Supermassive Games could be working on a Scream game
Insider The Tipster claims they've been talking about a Scream game since May, and while they hadn't heard of Supermassive Games being attached until recently, the Until Dawn developer fits the bill for a blood-soaked outing. Apparently, they have a strong history of correct movie leaks, so watch this space.
Before you bemoan ANOTHER asymmetric horror in the vein of the recently-released The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or short-lived Evil Dead: The Game, remember Supermassive's history. The acclaimed developer is known for its narrative-driven games where the fate of the characters are left in your hands.
The idea of an alternate reality Scream story where you could kill Neve Campbell's Sidney and save Rose McGowan's Tatum Riley to make her the final girl sounds like a blast. Also, you only have to look at The Quarry's amazing mo-cap of David Arquette to see why he needs to reprise his role as Dewey Riley.
The history of Ghostface in games
As noted by Bloody-Disgusting, Ghostface carved their way into video games for a 2011 tie-in mobile game for Scream 4. It was a Fruit Ninja-esque title that let you slice and dice victims with Ghostface's knife. In 2017, HorrorGameDev announced a game that was supposed to release in time for the franchise's 25th anniversary.
Bridging the gaps between film, TV, and game, the Scream title was going to kill off Sidney Prescott and send you off on an adventure as the next final girl/boy. Although HorrorGameDev dropped the project, Stefano Cagnani released it on itch.io so you could (it's now removed) get a taste of what could've been.
You know the rest of the story, with DBD (2019) and Black Ops Cold War (2021) welcoming Ghostface to the fold. If Supermassive is the studio to handle a Scream game amidst the franchise's movie resurgence, we can't think of anyone better to let the corn syrup flow.
