If there's one thing Nintendo is good at doing, it's sleeping on the potential of remaking its classic titles. Back in the '90s, the Nintendo 64 boasted some of the greatest games of all time, and while some have gotten the love they deserve, where's our remake for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time?
Released in 1998, the first 3D game to grace the already booming Zelda franchise has rightly secured a place in the history books. While our attention is set on the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom these days, let's not forget Ocarina walked so it could run.
What is the Unreal Engine Ocarina of Time remake?
We've previously covered the various Unreal Engine remakes of Ocarina, and as progress continues, creator CryZENx has reached the infamous Bottom of the Well section. Giving us some serious Resident Evil vibes, we see a new-gen version of the terrifying Dead Hand.
As Zelda enemies go, none are quite as scary as the Dead Hand. Still, that's nothing compared to seeing its twisted and distorted face in Unreal Engine. All of this, just to get the Lens of Truth.
Loving the Unreal Engine Ocarina of Time remake, someone wrote, "Not only did you capture the complete horror experience from the place, you upped it by 1000%, making it a truly unforgettable watching experience. It's honestly perfection and gosh, that Dead Hand model is insane!"
Another added, "If this is how scary he made the bottom of the well, I can't even imagine what he’s gonna do to the shadow temple. Imma cry myself to sleep after that vid."
Reminiscing, someone else concluded, "The enemies in games today don't invoke the same sense of courage I felt as a kid when I overcame my fear of places like the well. I'll never forget my little brother crying in terror whilst he watched me play this part of the game."
Is Nintendo working on an Ocarina of Time remake?
Unfortunately, we're left with the work of wannabe Hylians when it comes to an Ocarina of Time remake. Nintendo has been slow on the uptake of revamping your old favourites, but only recently, we were gifted Metroid Prime Remastered.
As GameCube games get some attention, the polygonal problems of the N64 mean it's much harder to modernise the classic console's titles. It took us long enough to get Ocarina on Switch, let alone get a HD remaster. We'll have to make do with 2011's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on the 3DS.
Going against the idea of a new-gen revamp, Nintendo has previously downplayed the idea of more remakes following Skyward Sword HD, and even then, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker tend to jump ahead of Ocarina in terms of fan requests.
One day, we might get to revisit Ocarina of Time, but for the time being, we're left terrified by fan versions of the Dead Hand when it comes to Zelda remakes.
