We're ready to get behind the controls of the Millennium Falcon, as Ubisoft's open-world Star Wars game is reportedly taking flight sooner than we expected. After things went quiet, it sounds like the team has done the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs to get the much-hyped game out early.
Much like a resurgence in superhero games thanks to Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy and Insomniac's Spider-Man, Star Wars has come a long way from Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi. While we've had the loot box scandal of Battlefront 2, Respawn's Jedi series has given us a "new hope" for the galaxy far, far away.
What's going on with Ubisoft's Star Wars game?
Alongside a presumed third game for Cal Kestis, there's Quantic Dream's Star Wars Eclipse and Ubisoft's mysterious game. While the publisher's Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has taken the spotlight so far, it's time for Star Wars to swing its lightsaber.
According to Kotaku, multiple sources claim the currently unnamed Star Wars game will release before the end of this financial year. If this is the case, it means it would be here before the end of March 2024. While Electronic Arts once had the keys to the cosmos, this will be Ubisoft's first foray into the world of Wookiees.
Alongside Assassin's Creed Mirage and Frontiers of Pandora, the repeatedly delayed Skull & Bones is apparently on the way, as well as "another large game." Anonymous sources claim that even though they aren't allowed to talk to the press, it's the Star Wars title.
When Kotaku asked for clarification, a Ubisoft spokesperson said, "We don't comment on rumors or speculation." As Quantic Dream's Eclipse is reportedly still years away, we're not sure what to think of the Ubisoft update...or lack of it.
Ubisoft is trying to claw back its reputation
Ubisoft is typically known for the Assassin's Creed franchise, and while it's releasing a tonne of games like Mirage and Assassin's Creed Infinity as a bread-and-butter staple, it's clear a reshuffle is needed. Ubisoft just announced its biggest operating loss ever but vowed to offer up a healthy slate of releases before March 2024.
Given that we've seen (literally) nothing of the mystery Star Wars game - and it doesn't even have a name other than being called "Project Helix" - we're struggling to see how it'll launch in that window. Even if it came in March, the fact details are so thin on the ground have us concerned.
The Division's Massive Entertainment is on deck for "Project Helix," with Creative Director Julian Gerighty promising something "totally different" from the developer's previous work. As the dev is also working on Frontiers of Pandora, it could be a busy 2023/2024. We hope there's a loyal squad of Jawas ready to get tinkering.
