Some things in the gaming world are a certainty. Like the existence of GTA 6 and Fallout 5, was anyone ever really buying that Naughty Dog was done with The Last of Us? Although the developer has seemingly shuttered our time with Uncharted, it seems the Cordyceps Infection is just getting started.
Following the runaway success of the OG The Last of Us in 2013, things were a little choppier when it came to its 2020 sequel. While some have named it one of the best games of all time, others have branded it as a "woke" desecration of the series. Either way, The Last of Us Part 3 could be a chance to learn and evolve.
The Last of Us Part 3 gets a cryptic nod from Naughty Dog
Discussing all things The Last of Us in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Naughty Dog boss Neil Druckmann gave us some insight into what to expect from Season 2 of HBO's live-action series and what the future could hold for the franchise in general.
When the topic of conversation turned to the ever-discussed The Last of Us Part 3, Druckmann coyly said, "As far as the next game at Naughty Dog, I can't say anything...My comms director over there will slaughter me." It's not a yes, but it definitely isn't a no when it comes to the idea of resurrecting those mushroom monsters.
What's interesting to note is that the interview referred to The Last of Us Part 3, and Druckmann directed the conversation to the studio's "next game." Considering there have been rife rumours that a third chapter in The Last of Us saga is next on the docket, Druckmann is only throwing fuel on the infected fire.
What do we know about The Last of Us Part 3?
Even though Naughty Dog has yet to give The Last of Us Part 3 the official green light, its eventual announcement should come as no big surprise. Back in 2021, Druckmann said a story had already been written, but confirmed that it doesn't necessarily mean it'd get made.
There's plenty of buzz for the mythical The Last of Us Part 3, with Abby actor Laura Bailey saying she wants to reprise her role. Earlier this year, a reunion between the voice actors and Druckmann sparked theories that work has started, while the man himself reiterated that the ball is in Naughty Dog's court whether the threequel gets made.
