You wait for news about The Last of Us Season 2, and then it all comes along at once. While we're disappointed that Season 2 of HBO's live-action adaptation slipped from its proposed 2024 release date, we can hear a clicking from the shadows ahead of its confirmed 2025 release

With Season 1 neatly tying off the events of 2013's The Last of Us with a bloody bow, it didn't take an uberfan to figure out that Season 2 would be heading into the divisive arc of 2020's The Last of Us Part II. The question is, how long can showrunner Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann spin things out for?

Craig Maizin spills all on The Last of Us Season 2

We've known for a while that The Last of Us would tell the much beefier Part II over multiple seasons, with Mazin previously winking to four seasons as the magic number. Now, he's back and has spilled all to Deadline to confirm the future of the series. Unfortunately, some of you are worried about what's to come.

Speaking to the outlet, Mazin confirms The Last of Us Season 2 will run for seven episodes, which is down from Season 1's order of nine. The upside is episodes should be longer, as Mazin explained, "We want every episode to feel like its own blockbuster to be honest with you." He also says there's one episode in S2 that's almost feature-length.

Beyond that, there are plans to extend The Last of Us into a potential Season 4. "We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too," confirmed Mazin.

Although HBO is yet to give the green light, he continued, "We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4."

The Last of Us HBO Bloater

While we'd think you'd all be happy that we're getting a lot more The Last of Us, there are multiple concerns. From making vast swings away from the core story of the games to dragging out Part II over three seasons, fans aren't sure how to feel about the announcement.

One disgruntled viewer said, "I really hope this isn’t the case, that would mean they are making significant changes to the story," while another added, "7 episodes??! Nah that’s disappointing." A third concluded, "F**k me the whole thing won’t be out till 2029."

Even if we're getting fewer episodes in Season 2, at least it sounds like they'll be longer. As for Mazin's mention of one being feature length, fans of the games are already pencilling it in for THAT major character departure. Could The Last of Us Season 2 really end on a certain golf club cliffhanger?
