Following the closure of Tango Gamesworks and hopes of The Evil Within 3 being dashed, fans have called on Resident Evil to reanimate the series via a potential crossover.

If there's one thing that Resident Evil has going for it, it's brand identity. As well as constantly evolving with each mainline entry and the many spin-offs, the Resiverse has expanded far beyond this with its many collaborations.
Making its mark in everything from Fortnite to The Division 2, PUBG Mobile to Dead by Daylight, these crossovers keep us well fed - despite Capcom's sometimes sporadic release of Resi games. With the recent shuttering of Tango Gamesworks and hopes of The Evil Within 3 seemingly dying with it, could Capcom come to the rescue?
Resident Evil can save The Evil Within
Over on Reddit, horror hounds asked what other gaming franchises we'd like to see the Resiverse crossover with. While there were calls for Silent Hill, Alan Wake, and (our personal favourite of Dino Crisis), the OP questioned whether a crossover with The Evil Within could work.
Saying they think Sebastian Castellanos would be perfect as a crossover or cameo character in a Resident Evil game, it sparked a fierce debate. One gamer lamented, "Damn bruh why you gotta remind us that Evil Within 3 is probably dead now 😔."
Another said, "I'm with you on this one. Both The Evil Within and Silent Hill would be cool. I think Revelations 2 is the closest I’ve personally felt to one of those games, in a RE game. The atmosphere of Revelations 2 is very similar to those two series, in my personal opinion."
Of course, Resident Evil has enough of a brand identity not to bring other franchises into this world. It's more typical that we see the likes of Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine appear in other games. Still, it doesn't look like we'll see The Evil Within in any other form for a while.
The Evil Within 3
The timing is admittedly atrocious, considering Tango Gameworks' fate, but in terms of continuing its legacy, Resident Evil could be an unlikely saviour. Even though we don't imagine Capcom would suddenly scoop up The Evil Within IP, remember when Resident Evil 6 added the cast of Left 4 Dead to its Mercenaries mode?
It's also no coincidence that Resident Evil co-creator Shinji Mikami was responsible for directing The Evil Within and its sequel at Tango. He happened to leave in February 2023 and founded a studio called KAMUY Inc. to move away from survival horror, but he surely won't want to see the name crumble.
There were rife rumours that Tango had been working on The Evil Within 3, and while the studio's closure seemingly puts us even further away from the threequel, that doesn't mean the story ends here. Imagine booting up Resident Evil 9 and playing with Sebastian Castellanos in Mercenaries.
