It seems like it's only a matter of time until Disney realises it's sitting on a goldmine with Knights of the Old Republic, with the game series being far more than just one of the best Star Wars stories ever told. In particular, BioWare's original Knights of the Old Republic is held as one of the greatest video games ever made.
We're in a new era of Star Wars, and after 47 years of the Skywalker Saga, we're finally branching out. The Acolyte has just debuted on Disney+ and takes us back to 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. But, could a live-action Knights of the Old Republic take us back even further?Β
Leslye Headland wants to tackle a Knight of the Old Republic series
The untapped potential of the High Republic era is a hot property right now, with the multimedia project kicking off in 2021 and already expanding from novels and comics to Quantic Dreams' Star Wars Eclipse and now The Acolyte. The Ancient Galactic Republic could be just as lucrative, and it seems Leslye Headland knows this.
Speaking to Omelete, The Acolyte showrunner explained how she'd love to bring Knights of the Old Republic to life. Giving the nod to KOTOR 2's Kreai, Headland said, "I've always wanted to explore a live-action version of the Knights of the Old Republic game and Kreia's character. I think it would be a really interesting story to bring to life."
No matter what you think of The Acolyte, Headland clearly has a talent for exploring the darker side of the galaxy far, far away, and we'd be intrigued by her take on Kreia's descent into becoming Darth Traya. Despite the KOTOR games not being canon, Headland has already said The Acolyte will bring parts of the Legends canon back into the mainstream.Β
Star Wars fandom split over Headland heading up live-action KOTOR
The Acolyte has had something of a rocky start, with critics loving it and all the usual complainers that think Star Wars is 'woke' slamming it for having a black female protagonist. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the first two episodes have a disappointing 27% audience score, while social media is full of some pretty gross comments.
As for Headland taking the reins of a live-action KOTOR, one Star Wars fanatic wrote, "They need to keep her away from the IP with pepper spray and insect powder," while another said, "I think it would be interesting if she never had a job again." A third added, "By bring to life, do you mean make it woke and gay? Pass."
A fourth concluded, "Yeah and it would be about Revan and Malak being gay lovers and that is what brought them to the Dark Side because the Jedi were intolerant bigots. Probably won't genocide the Mandalorians because... Reasons?"
Star Wars fandom is split like the Sith and the Jedi these days, with some genuinely promising stories being buried in a vicious turf war where no one can seem to agree. You've been asking for a Knights of the Old Republic adaptation for years, and if The Acolyte continues to prove the haters wrong, we say give Headland a shot.
