Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls series remains a mystery as Skyrim built on the success of Oblivion, Morrowwind, and Daggerfall to cement itself in RPG folklore as one of the best - if not the single best - series ever made.
Yet following Skyrim and its countless re-skins and re-releases, the Edler Scrolls series has seemingly fallen into oblivion, having vanished from the face of Tamriel.
Now though, Talos has apparently been looking down on our soul gems and has come up trumps with reports of a surprise Oblivion remake. It's about time the 2006 game got some TLC again.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion may be getting re-made in UE5
Oblivion holds quite the place in the hearts of The Elder Scrolls fans, but having released nearly 20 years ago, the game barely functions unless it's overrun by mods that want to blow up your PC.
Still, news of a remake would run shivers down the spine of Mjoll the Lioness and other stone-cold brutes of The Elder Scrolls' world, and it could be on the cards.
Virtuos Games is apparently re-making Oblivion on Unreal Engine 5, as a former employee has reportedly leaked the project, shortly after another staff member leaked the Metal Gear Solid remake.
According to a now-deleted post on Reddit, the ex-employee claimed that the studio is working on five projects, with one being codenamed "Altar" and described as a "remaster/remake of Oblivion."
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake rumoured for 2025 release
Not only did the leak contain news that Virtuos Games is being joined by fellow studio Black Shamrock, which is "helping the studio for the art," but the leak also suggests that the Altar project will be ready to go come 2025.
Strangely, there is a fan-made remake of Oblivion going on inside Skyrim, which is also set to be finished in 2025, which could be the motive for Virtuos Games' input. The leaker then revealed that the remake will be "using both an Unreal Engine 5 project, and the old Oblivion one."
Given that Elder Scrolls VI's development has been driven off a cliff, a fully-functioning Oblivion remake might just spur the series back into life and bridge that gap until Skyrim's successor is finally made.
