Bethesda's community has countless talented modders who spend hours fleshing out the gameplay and features of titles like Skyrim.
Very few are more well-known than Skyrim Together, a team that created a mod in 2022 that introduced multiplayer to Skyrim and quickly garnered over 80,000 downloads.
Following the launch of Starfield, it was announced that they would be working on a similar system for the new title. While work began on the project, the modders have now revealed that they've stopped completely.
For them, Starfield is simply too "boring" to justify putting in the effort required for multiplayer, and they're not willing to put a massive amount of time into such a "mediocre" game.
Starfield modders scrap multiplayer mode because the game is "trash"
As reported by VG247 and IGN, a member of the Skyrim Together modding team took to their Discord to announce that they have stopped working on Starfield multiplayer. In their opinion, the game is "bland," and everything that typically makes a Bethesda game special has "completely gone."
"The game is boring, bland, and the main draw of Bethesda games, exploration in a lively and handcrafted world, was completely gone... I won't be continuing development on Starfield Together, I'm not gonna put my heart and soul into a mod for a game as mediocre as this."
This demonstrates the extent of Starfield's disappointment, considering the modders are often the most passionate Bethesda fans. Even they are struggling to defend Starfield and are now giving up on major projects.
One of the biggest elements of replayability for Skyrim was the incredible mods, and unfortunately, it doesn't look like Starfield will be getting the same amount of support.
How highly is Starfield rated four months after launch?
Taking a look at Metacritic, Starfield is currently sitting at 83 from critics, which puts it in the "Generally Favorable" category. However, it takes a major dip in the user score with 7.0, making it "Mixed or Average."
Overall, it feels like at launch Starfield was received generally well, but as time has gone by, the cracks have started to show.
There's a lot of criticism for the game online, whether it's the story, gameplay, or exploration. Now modders are giving up on the title, Starfield's future isn't looking the brightest. With a little luck, the upcoming Shattered Space DLC can restore faith in the sci-fi explorer.
