Insomniac Games is doing what we never thought possible in comic book video games - creating a cohesive expanded universe. We know Rocksteady is working as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League as part of the Arkhamverse, but it's been so long since an Arkham game, most won't remember they're connected.

Following the success of 2018's Spider-Man, 2020's Miles Morales, and 2023's Spider-Man 2, we're trying something new with Insomniac's Wolverine. While the studio could've left these as two separate projects, we were recently told that Spider-Man and Wolverine are part of the same universe. So, what does this mean?

Spider-Man Creative Director hints at Wolverine crossover

Speaking to IGN, Spider-Man Creative Director Bryan Intihar teased the potential of a crossover but refused to make it official. When asked if there was ever an idea to have more than just Miles' Wolverine suit in Spider-Man 2, Intihar explained, "We wouldn't be true Marvel fans if we didn't have discussions like that."

Still, it didn't go any further, with him reiterating how the team thought, "Let's let the Wolverine team cook. If something happens in the future, great, but right now, let's give them a clear runaway to making the best Wolverine game possible."

As well as mentioning the Savage Land and a potential Spider-Verse tease, it's clear Insomniac has plans for where things are heading in the upcoming Spider-Man 3. Just because it's teased as the final chapter of this story, we're not buying that this is the end of Insomniac's Marvel Gaming Universe.

A Marvel Gaming Universe could be on the way

Wolverine and Spider-Man The Astonishing Spider-Man

Although we're disappointed that Spider-Man 2 didn't end with some Wolverine-inspired tease of Weapon X or Doctor Octopus using Adamantium to break free from The Raft, Insomniac could easily fix this by having a Spidey cameo in Wolverine. By the sounds of it, Intihar is keeping the two stories separate... for now.

There's been plenty of chatter about Insomniac working on a secret multiplayer game, which has sparked some wild speculation about a Fantastic Four or full-blown X-Men co-op title. The developer has played coy about these rumours, although you can only imagine the fan hype if it turns out to be accurate.

The Fantastic Four were hinted at in Spider-Man 2, with their iconic Baxter Building HQ appearing. As for the X-Men, we can't imagine Wolverine not having at least some mentions of Charles Xavier's gifted youngsters. Hopefully, this is the start of the MGU and a video game adaptation of the Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine miniseries.
