Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is almost here, and it feels like it’s been a long time coming.

PlayStation has always bolstered Spider-Man, whether it be in the first full title from Insomniac Games or its Miles Morales-focussed spin-off, and it has already proven to be one of the very best original series that PlayStation has at its disposal.

That doesn’t mean that Insomniac Games is afraid to change things up, though, as it turns out a new feature is coming to the game that is ruffling some feathers - and players are incredibly confused.

Spider-Man 2 has fall damage - but you can toggle it off

In a pretty strange turn, it looks as though Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is introducing fall damage for the first time, and fans can’t quite wrap their heads around why.

The news comes from Doug Sheahan, the Senior Programming Director for the game, who has revealed that you can simply perish if you hit the ground too hard. This is a controversial choice, as many Spider-Man games throughout history have opted to cut this feature out in order to give players a little more freedom of exploration and more excitement in plummeting to the ground, so fans are shocked, to say the least.

The interesting thing about this, though, is that the feature is entirely togglable.

"Something we're seeing more and more of is that players like to be able to customize their experience," Sheahan says in an interview with IGN.

"For those players, we added the ability to enable fall damage (fall damage defaults to Off) and even let people tweak how swinging feels with our Swing Steering Assist setting. We hope players who enjoy a deep dive into the details have fun experimenting."

Is there a "right" way to play Spider-Man 2?

This freedom is refreshing, of course, but some players are tangling themselves up trying to figure out which of the options is the "correct" way to experience the game. And ultimately, it seems that we don’t have an answer to that question for a reason.

Accessibility is key in modern PlayStation games, and if it makes the game more fun to be able to plummet to the ground with no penalty, then that’s the right way to play, and vice versa for the other fall damage option.

In the end, this is a good thing as it’ll help many to play the game without panic - and we can’t sniff at that.
