We're heading to chillier climes with the upcoming God of War Ragnarok, and while Sony pitched Sony Santa Monica's much-hyped adventure as one of the last PS4 games, the gaming giant has done a U-turn to shelter its fans from the cold.
First launched in 2013, the PS4 was the long-awaited successor to the PS3. Over the past decade, it's celebrated first-party legends like Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Marvel's Spider-Man, and Bloodborne - leaving behind an almost unparalleled reputation. Even as the PS5 muscles into the market like a giant wi-fi router to try and push out its older sibling, the PS4 still (apparently) has some fight in it.
Will Sony Keep Making PS4 Games?
Speaking to Axios, PlayStation Studio Head Hermen Hulst said, "We certainly don’t want to forget the millions of active players on PS4, and we want to ensure there are great games for them as well... We're evaluating it on a case-by-case basis." While we're not expecting a PS4-exclusive God of War spin-off for Atreus to suddenly pop up, it's good news for those who are still struggling to nab a PS5.
The COVID-19 pandemic decimated the industry, and with the supply chain grinding to a halt, the PS5 continues to be out of stock as soon as a rare shipment finds itself on shelves. That being said, the latest update isn't painting Jim Ryan in a positive light. In 2020, he said that Sony believes in generations, only to p*ss off fans by announcing a bunch of PS5 games for PS4.
It's clear to see the changing of the tide, and even back when Cyberpunk 2077 released in 2020, the PS4 was accused of struggling to keep up with the new-gen potential of games. More recently, we've seen Gotham Knights ditch its last-gen titles, while we're also shocked to learn the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake will still scrape a PS4 release.
What PS5 Games Are On The Way?
If you believe a recently leaked portfolio on ResetEra, there are plenty of PS5-only games to keep your thumbs busy. There have been plenty of complaints that the PS5 simply isn't worth the money right now due to the lack of new-gen titles. Still, whispers of a possible Twisted Metal reboot, Kojima Production's potential Death Stranding sequel, and an open-world adventure from Sackboy's Sumo Digital are all promising... if true.
At least we know Insomniac Games is leading the charge thanks to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and the fact it's working on some major titles for the PS5. Peter Parker and Miles Morales are joining forces for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, while the mysterious Wolverine game is also on the docket for the PS5. For the time being, Sony seems torn between a pair of generations, with neither side coming off particularly well. We know you love the PS4, but it could be time to put it out to pasture.
