Sony has revealed that it's officially gearing up to launch a brand-new PlayStation 5 console, with a much more slender casing and a detachable disc-drive.

What is the PS5 Slim?

The new PS5 Slim is revealed to be the next iteration of the PlayStation, and when the current model of the PS5 has sold out, this will be the only console available to players directly from Sony.

"As the holiday season approaches, we are excited to share that we have a new PS5 model launching," says Sony in a new release on their blog.

"To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage."

The prices of the console are as follows:

  • U.S.
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 499.99 USD
    PS5 Digital Edition – 449.99 USD
  • Europe
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 549.99 EUR
    PS5 Digital Edition – 449.99 EUR
  • U.K.
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 479.99 GBP
    PS5 Digital Edition – 389.99 GBP
  • Japan
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 66,980 JPY (includes tax)
PS5 Digital Edition – 59,980 JPY (includes tax)

When is the PS5 coming out?

In another surprising turn for Sony, the company has revealed that the new variant of the PS5 isn't that far away. The console will be available in the USA and on the PlayStation Store in November 2023, and it'll be rolling out to the rest of the world in the following months.

It's a pretty big deal, especially as this new edition of the console is planned to be the only one on the market eventually - and only time will tell if it's any better.
