With so many bullets in its chamber, Microsoft is currently weighing up how to fire off its Call of Duty gun.

The publisher is armed and ready with Modern Warfare 3 reportedly being considered for Game Pass in the coming days, and Black Ops 6 already primed for release on the subscription service in October.

But before it fires the whole magazine into the Game Pass target, the Call of Duty developers are dishing out DLC for free, making the legacy games whole.

Call of Duty 4 DLC is now free

17 years after its release, Activision has just taken a punt on Modern Warfare (Call of Duty 4) and made its DLC (the Variety Pack) absolutely free. The change sees the price of $9.99 get slashed.

CoD 4 is currently only available on Xbox 360, but birthed the iconic All Ghillied Up mission with a younger Captain Price, while its multiplayer was famed for maps like Backlot, Shipment, and Crash.

The full game still costs a mere $9.99, but you can now complete the set with a free DLC.

For anyone still playing CoD 4 on Xbox 360, somehow, the free DLC includes four maps Broadcast, Creek, Chinatown, and Killhouse, the latter of which has been popularised with a remaster in MW2019 as a hectic all-action miniature map.

Call of Duty looks to be gearing up old titles for Game Pass

The timing of this is rather inconspicuous though, as Activision games are all rumoured to be added to the now more expensive Ultimate Game Pass service, leading fans to speculate that legacy CoDs are finally making that step too.

"This is a good workaround if they ever end up putting the games on game pass too," said CoD guru TheGhostOfHope.

"There is barely any money in the DLC packs for these games anymore so why not make [them] free so when the games hit game pass everybody has the same maps to play with each other?"
