Can we spare a moment for Code: Veronica, please? As Capcom goes all-in on its upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake, it's becoming clear the Resident Evil franchise is once again abandoning this forgotten gem. Much like how the acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas is the black sheep of the Fallout family, 2000's Resident Evil – Code: Veronica has an awkward place in the history books.
Whether it's the fact it wasn't given the standardised numbering of other Resident Evil games or that it arrived on the disastrous Dreamcast, Code: Veronica never hit the dizzying heights of its siblings. We've come to love the game, and while its mythical remake should've come next after 2020's Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake, it's been lost to the ages.
Is Capcom Planning A Code: Veronica Remake?
Currently, there's no official word about a Code: Veronica remake. For whatever reason, Capcom only seems committed to remastering/remaking its mainline entries. There's a small glimmer of hope though, and in an interview with Noisy Pixel, RE4 remake producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said "maybe" when grilled on Code: Veronica's potential.
There's little more to it, with Hirabayashi simply saying if the "opportunity comes, maybe." It's far from confirmation that Code: Veronica is next on the docket, but at least it's something. Fans were quick to jump on the hype train, with one writing, "BRO it's the game that needed a remake the most, plus it has a ton of lore, and is one of the most beloved RE games. Do. It." Another added, "I'm pretty sure RE4 remake is going to sell like Hotcakes, and CV could be next, but they need to focus on RE4 still," while a third said, "Should have been done before RE4 smh."
Someone reminded us that Capcom said no to an RE3 remake and then released the trailer literally a month after. Even though we get the impression that there really isn't a Code: Veronica remake in the works, that doesn't mean there soon won't be. With the money-making potential of having Chris and Claire Redfield in the same game - plus the fact its outdated mechanics seem ripe for reinvention - it's an easy sell.
Are More Resident Evil Remakes On the Way?
We're not sure where the Resiverse goes next. The upcoming RE4 remake wasn't exactly a surprise considering it was leaked years ago in that massive Capcom data breach. It's not too out of the question to expect 2005's Resident Evil 5 could be on the cards eventually. Still, it's unclear whether titles outside of the main eight will get a look in.
As well as Code: Veronica, the likes of Resident Evil Zero and Revelations deserve some TLC. Code: Veronica has a place close to our hearts, and only recently, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City's Johannes Roberts said he loves the game and would love to make a live-action movie. Ah, if only your first movie hadn't been a load of rubbish. While we wait for Capcom to pull its finger out, at least you can check out a fan remake of the lost classic.
