If you're ready for another rootin' tootin' adventure, then saddle up for a wild one - those rumours of a Red Dead Redemption remaster are riding into town once again. It's been 13 years since Rockstar Games first introduced us to John Marston, and we think that's more than enough time to warrant a remake.
As a successor to 2004's forgotten Red Dead Revolver, Red Dead Redemption is an epic adventure from the team behind the GTA games. These days, the OG has largely been outshone by 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2 being held as one of the greatest games of all time, but spare a thought for the 2010 outing.
What is the Red Dead Redemption remaster rumour?
Most of us had given up on the dream of a Red Dead Redemption remaster, but according to Gematsu, it could be time to start those tongues wagging again. The Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea has listed a new age rating for Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption.
On June 15, Take-Two Interactive applied for the classification "not available for youth," with the code of CC-NV-230615-001. This hints at a console release, with "NV" being for console and "NP" being for PC. Dare we wish for an Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 release of Red Dead Redemption in 2023?
Suggesting this isn't simply reclassifying the old version for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, ratings for the original release, the Undead Nightmare Collection, and the GOTY Edition already exist on the classification site. You might remember when the maligned GTA Trilogy was spoiled ahead of an official reveal.
We're unsure what this really means, but if you still aren't sold, remember the same site correctly listed the Modern Warfare 2 campaign remaster and 2K's LEGO football game ahead of time, giving us a reasonable track record to dream of a Red Dead Redemption remaster.
What is Rockstar Games working on?
Apart from the obvious Grand Theft Auto 6, there were recent rumblings that Rockstar was working on an unannounced VR game. The rumour mill went into overdrive that we could be getting anything from a VR Bully remake to GTA V in VR. Just imagine if we got a VR Red Dead Redemption.
With Red Dead Redemption being removed from PlayStation in 2022, a remaster akin to Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part 1 would be more than welcome. Then again, it could just as likely be a disappointing mess like Grove Street Games' GTA Trilogy.
We won't get our hopes up for a Red Dead Redemption remaster, especially after the GTA Trilogy supposedly nixed these plans alongside a GTA 4 remaster. Then again, with sales of the Red Dead franchise having crossed 75 million in 2023, it's clear there are plenty of wannabe sheriffs out there.
