It has been too long since we saw Red Dead Redemption 2 in action without the help of mods. Of course, the game’s community helps to bring it to life, and sure, TikTok loves to fire out clips of players committing acts of pure hatred in a bid to show off how slick the game can be, but we’ve been in something of a drought.

The era of the game is over, and even though many players are still clinging to the gunslinger, Rockstar has moved on into the era of GTA 6.

But fans think there could be something on the way that even they couldn’t have predicted. A new update may be coming.

Red Dead Redemption 2 could be getting a new update

The SteamDB Changelist, indicating a shift in Red Dead Redemption 2's files on Steam.

In a pretty shocking twist, fans think they’ve found evidence of a new update set to come to Red Dead Redemption 2, indicating that some new content could finally be coming for them.

The detail was first spotted by PCGamesN, who pointed out that the backend tracker section of SteamDB has indicated a new update to the game’s Steam page that touched down on February 16.

The tracking site is pretty good at pointing out when changes are made to a game even when developers don’t want players to know about it. A similar change was marked on the Steam page for Elden Ring, seeming to herald the arrival of the game’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC - and fans think this could be similar.

Steam players still love Red Dead Redemption 2

The current players statistic of Red Dead Redemption 2 on Steam, amounting to 36,124 players concurrently at the time of writing.

Though players feel as though Rockstar has abandoned Red Dead Online, there is still a wealth of players taking to Steam to enjoy the game, often thanks to the PC version of the game’s unofficial mod support.

The game, as of the time of writing, has 36,124 players still engaged in Arthur Morgan’s story, which is incredibly impressive for a single-player game a console generation behind us that launched five years ago (yes, five. We’re not happy about it either).

This update could be a whole lot of nothing, but when thinking about the possibilities of what it could be, there’s no doubt that fans are getting their hopes up. Maybe this is the penance for Red Dead Online we’ve been waiting for.
