Waiting to see what Nintendo pulls out of the bag for its next console is starting to become exhausting, especially as rumours of its release date have shifted from holiday 2024 to early 2025.

Nintendo needs to have something massive up its sleeve to contend with the successes of the Switch, and a direct sequel is expected to be the only thing that will keep the company out of yet another console slump.

It looks like a sequel could be just what we're getting, as a new leak has indicated that the Switch's iconic Joy-Con controllers could be returning - though with a bit of a twist.

Nintendo Switch successor to have magnetic Joy-Cons, claims leak

The original Nintendo Switch console.

Via apparent sources working with manufacturers of the next Nintendo console, a new leak from Spanish gaming site Vandal claims the mythical Switch 2/next Nintendo console is coming with some sophisticated updates to our Joy-Cons.

The claim insists that the Joy-Con controllers that the Nintendo Switch popularised, will be making a return. The key difference is that magnets will attach the controllers to the console rather than their existing rail system. The site also suggests the existing Nintendo Switch Pro controller will work with the new console.

It's an interesting claim that, for the most part, reassures fans who'd assumed the new console would be a direct successor to the Switch. We don't know how these magnets will work (making magnetised controllers could be a problem during intense gaming moments in handheld mode), but until we see them in action, all we have is speculation.

This latest Switch 2 leaks could be the last detail that we needed to practically confirm that Nintendo's next console is a follow-up to the OG. Take the leak with a pinch of salt, but don't keep yourself from getting excited.
