In the world of video games, it's easy to get lost in a sea of remakes, remasters, and reboots. Even when we get wholly new IPs, they're accused of ripping off some classic title. Then again, some games are simply so good, they deserve a revisit.

While the Resident Evil series was in danger of being buried alive following the criticisms of Resident Evil 6, 2017's Resident Evil 7 gave CPR to the bloated corpse and restored our faith in the survival horror. Since then, new games have walked hand-in-hand with remakes, as Capcom looks like it has nailed the formula.

Resident Evil fans want another Resident Evil 1 remake

Everyone knows about 1996's Resident Evil's PlayStation release - largely helping pioneer our ongoing obsession with horror games. The title would've been a juggernaut on its own, but that was only helped by the critical acclaim of the 2002 REmake on the GameCube.

Capcom revisited the Spencer Mansion again in 2014, with the Resident Evil HD Remaster also arriving on PlayStation and Xbox. We've come on leaps and bounds since then, and with Capcom being on a winning streak with its recent remakes that started with Resident Evil 2 in 2019, there are calls for another RE1 remake.

Over on Reddit, players weighed up the pros and cons of Alpha Team suiting up once again. When the OP said they'd love to see a modern remake, someone else added, "I didn’t think it was necessary, but after the RE4 Remake could you imagine what RE1 would look like in the RE Engine? I think it could be pretty amazing."

Another added, "Could see them having a RE1REremake announcement for the 30th anniversary that’s a few years away," and a third concluded, "My main thing is I hear so many people talk about skipping RE 1 due to the controls/camera, and I believe RE1 shouldn't be skipped." It would take a little work, but who wouldn't love a re-REmake?

Where are we up to with Resident Evil remakes?

Resident Evil 2015 remake

The Resident Evil series is at something of a crossroads. We know Resident Evil 9 is out there somewhere, but following the success of 2023's Resident Evil 4 remake, we're running out of titles. Resident Evil 5 logically comes next, although it comes with its own problems

Namely, many said that another RE1 remake could tie brilliantly into the mythical RE5 remake, with the Lost in Nightmares expansion working perfectly as a RE1 DLC. For others, they're rightly asking where our Code: Veronica remake is.

Capcom has played coy on the idea of more remakes, and even if a remake of the remake was announced today, it would likely be a few years off - more than enough time to get us hyped for a trip back to the Arklay Mountains. Either way, it's about time we revisit the beret-wearing Jill Valentine.
