StarCraft has been quiet for a while, much to the distress of fans. And we mean a while. 2010 was the last time we saw a mainline game in the sci-fi strategy series, and while the genre has offered supplementary titles, none of them has been precisely what StarCraft fans have wanted.
Still, the StarCraft name has always been a shining example of what strategy games can accomplish. This dormancy is pretty sad, given the legacy of the franchise and how much love fans offered it when it first launched. But now, with Xbox at the helm, there could be a chance that the series makes a comeback.
Is There A New StarCraft Game?
It looks as though now the series has a new big boss, we could be about to see the StarCraft series lurch from the grave. It's Phil Spencer that has given fans hope, and considering his incredible passion for the games in the Activision Blizzard lineup, he seems like the perfect man to head it up. Spencer could be doing exactly that.
In an interview with Wired, Spencer was asked about the possibility of reviving the beloved series in the backlog of Activision Blizzard. While he could neither confirm nor deny, he seems keen to get to work on bringing them back. "The first thing I would say is, I'm not allowed to make any decisions about what happens at Blizzard or Activision or King," he says. "So this is all just kind of talking and thinking about what the opportunity is.
"I'm excited about getting to sit down with the teams at Activision and Blizzard and King to talk about back catalogue and opportunities that we might have. So I will dodge the question other than to say it's not something I can actively work on right now. But the thought of being able to think about what could happen with those franchises is pretty exciting to me, as somebody who spent a lot of hours playing those games."
Phil Spencer Celebrates 25 Years Of Age Of Empires
Spencer keet up his celebrations of iconic series, with the interview being conducted to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Age of Empires, and it's clear that he has a lot of passion for the game. "So it's a good thread to pull on this one. I mean, the thing that we saw with Age was less about the genre, to be honest, and more just how the community was continuing to play.
"The games were still available to buy, and we just saw a vibrant community of people out there playing. And we weren't actively engaged with the community as Xbox." It's nice to see a celebration not only of the games under Xbox, but also of those games' fans from the head of the company. Xbox seems to remain a player-first company - and to be fair to them, it's working nicely.
