The first Overwatch Championship Series Major bracket has been set, inviting teams from EMEA, North America, and Asia to compete against each other at Dreamhack Dallas as the regional competitions concluded this weekend.
OWCS regions find their champions
The Asian region has crowned its first victor. While the super team of Falcons had the upper hand in the South Korean regional and the upper bracket finals, they had to bow out against their local rival Crazy Raccoons in the OWCS Asia Grand Finals with a surprising 4-1 scoreline.
Both teams are seen as some of the most stacked rosters in Overwatch esports history, fielding some of the most elite players in each position. Throughout stage 1 of OWCS Korea, the two teams had been going back and forth against one another, making a solid case that they are currently the two strongest teams on the planet.
A rich history between the two teams, with a majority of Crazy Raccoons teams being former teammates of Falcon’s coach Park "Crusty" Dae-hee and Kim "Proper" Dong-hyun on the San Francisco Shock during the last Overwatch League season, added a special quality to the matchup that is likely to play out once more in Dallas.
In North America, the Toronto Defiant could defend their Stage 1 title in the final against M80 despite losing to them earlier in the tournament and having to come back from the lower bracket. Much like Crazy Raccoons, Defiant came back with a vengeance, winning the Grand Final with a relatively dominant 4-1 score.
The closest of the regional finals delivered the EMEA region, with ENCE and SpaceStation Gaming also rematching in the Grand Finals after having met each other in the upper bracket final.
While it looked like the comeback victory could be achieved in all three regions, SSG showed tenacity throughout the series and came back from a 1-3 score to win the final on map seven, delivering one of the most memorable matches in recent Overwatch esports history.
The bracket is set
For the first OWCS Major at Dreamhack Dallas, the top three teams from EMEA and North America, as well as the top two seeds from Asia, were invited to battle it out in a double-elimination bracket. While all winners directly qualified for the event, for the Western regions, a Circuit Point leaderboard determined the second and third seeds to be sent to Texas.
For EMEA, back-to-back runner-up ENCE and Stage 1 champion Twisted Minds took the spots, while M80 and Students of the Game snuck in for North America. For OWCS Asia, Team Falcons assumed the position of the second seed following their silver medal.
The bracket shook out with the following Round 1 matches:
Spacestation Gaming (EMEA) vs Students of the Game (NA)
Team Falcons (Asia) vs ENCE (EMEA)
Crazy Raccoons (Asia) vs M80 (NA)
Toronto Defiant (NA) vs Twisted Minds (EMEA)
The Overwatch action at Dreamhack Dallas is set to run from May 31 to June 2 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, with tickets still available on the official Dreamhack website.
