Overwatch 2 Gothenburg map gets long-awaited development update

Overwatch 2's Gothenburg map was starting to feel a little like the stuff of legend, but Blizzard has confirmed it's still planned.

Overwatch 2 keeps growing, and the sequel that seemingly nobody expected has grown into a fantastic shooter in its own right thanks to a host of seasonal content and a free-to-play price tag - or lack thereof.

The game's next season, Season 4, will add a new Hero in the form of Lifeweaver. As exciting as he is, that means we won't be getting a new map, with maps and Heroes trading off.

As part of a recent group interview session that GGRecon was invited to take part in, however, a question arose about the fate of the Gothenburg map.

Where is the Overwatch 2 Gothenburg map?

Gavin J Jurgens-Fyhrie, Lead Narrative Designer on Overwatch 2, gave a small but assuring update for those looking to take their team-based shenanigans to Sweden in the future.

"It's early for us to say when you'll see that, but we have been working on it and it's still in our future," Jurgens-Fyhrie explained.

What's the deal with Gothenburg? Well, the map was revealed as an Assault map back at Blizzcon 2019, but with the Assault mode being removed from competitive play with Overwatch 2, fans have long wondered just what became of the canal-adjacent battlefield.

The fact that Blizzard has confirmed it's still being worked on suggests it may see the light of day after all, and we may even get to visit Torbjörn's workshop or 'boop' enemies into the water with Lucio. For now, though, we have the Antarctic Peninsula which was added in Overwatch 2 Season 3 as our most recent destination.
