A new leak indicates that backwards compatibility is coming to the new Nintendo home console, and if it's true, the Switch successor could be one of the greatest consoles yet.

Nintendo hype has pushed through the roof thanks to the company (yet again) revealing big news in a nonchalant tweet. Just like Miyamoto revealing the movie based on The Legend of Zelda, the official Nintendo Twitter account announced that a Switch successor is coming at some point this fiscal year.

Although there's a big Nintendo Direct coming in June, we shouldn't expect details about it then. Not that the idea of a Switch sequel needed it, but the reveal has fuelled the hype train. As more leaks begin to pour out, it's clear that the new home console will be something to truly celebrate.

New reports claim next Nintendo console will have backward compatibility

A new claim on X (formerly Twitter) suggests that full backward compatibility will be arriving on the Switch successor. If this is the case, it will do a lot to convince fans to pick it up on day one - not that many of you needed an excuse.

One user reported on some Japanese files from Nintendo, suggesting that a player's Nintendo Account will be used to track the games that they've owned and played, giving them access to the titles on the new console. This comes after previous whispers that the Switch 2 would have backward compatibility

"Nintendo Accounts have been in preparation since before the release of the Nintendo Switch in order to maintain long-term relationships with customers across hardware generations, so they will continue to be used on successor models," says the user.

This is yet to be corroborated, and as an official translation of the document is hopefully coming soon, it's all speculation for now. There's little doubt that the idea is exciting, as simple backward compatibility could help the supposed Switch 2 feel essential. After all, with concerns about the console's rumoured magnetic Joy-Cons, it could do with some support.
