"Get to the choppa, boy." Dan Trachtenberg's upcoming Predator reboot might be flying under the radar a little at the moment, but with promises that Prey has been inspired by Sony Santa Monica's God of War, it suddenly got a little more interesting.
Let's be honest, the Predator franchise is one of those horror movie anomalies. Much like its Xenomorph cousins and the Alien movies, we've had some highs and lows. Taking influence from what some people think is the best video game of all time is a good place to start.
How Is The New Preator Inspired By God Of War?
For those who don't know, Prey is a prequel to the first four Predator movies and will chart the alien hunter's first visit to Earth. Set 300 years ago, Amber Midthunder plays a Comanche warrior who has to protect her tribe from this technologically advanced menace.
Trachtenberg is clearly a huge God of War fan and tweeted his praise for the recent PC port - which has been getting rave reviews. Here, he saluted former God of War Game Director Cory Barlog and added, "I will pile on that praise and point out— it's had some influence on PREY." He didn't reveal how Prey was inspired by GoW, but we're guessing combat is at least part of it.
God of War was famously filmed in an almost single shot, but we doubt Prey is taking the Birdman route in that respect. Others have suggested we could see a Kratos and Atreus-inspired relationship where Midthunder's Naru is trained by the Predator. Obviously, it wouldn't be her father.
What Else Do We Know About The New Predator Movie?

Away from God of War comparisons, Prey has at least piqued our interest. Seeing Dutch and Dillon do their epic handshake in the OG Predator is part of memeable history, while Danny Glover's Lieutenant Mike Harrigan being stalked around a police department delivered a cult classic sequel. Sadly, the likes of 2018's The Predator are more remembered for hiring a sex offender than the actual plot of the movie.
Given that God of War is set for a massive 2022 thanks to the release of Ragnarok, it's a clever way to get people talking about Prey. Much like 2018's God of War, Prey is pitching itself as delivering more than just a change of location.
Prey still doesn't have a solid release date, however, it's expected to launch on Hulu and Disney+'s Starz branch this summer. It could be well-timed to coincide with Ragnarok's release, but when both are out, we'll see whether the comparisons are right or it's just a clever way of drumming up interest in your movie. What's next, an Alien reboot inspired by Starfield?
Trachtenberg is best-known for directing the brutal 10 Cloverfield Lane, so we're hopeful this could be the franchise's return to form that Shane Black failed to deliver with The Predator. Remembering that God of War has had some truly epic battles over the years, Prey should at least be an action-packed outing for the clicking beast.
