Vavle's Counter-Strike 2 has been a treat for long-time fans of the franchise, but even for the players who aren't engaged in the game itself, it's nice to see that the team is actually still producing first-party titles.
It's been some time since Valve unveiled a game that everyone can enjoy, with its last example being Half-Life Alyx. It was a boundary-pushing VR game, which even despite its hardware limitations, served as the perfect addition to the game's world that equally bolstered the medium as a whole.
The legacy of Half-Life is a troubled one, and as the curse of Valve's threequels continues, our hopes of Half-Life 3 continue to crumble. Still, some fans think a new Half-Life instalment could be on the way.
Fans claim evidence for new Half-Life has been found
Fans have taken to Twitter to claim that they've discovered evidence of a new Half-Life game buried in the code of Counter-Strike 2.
The claim comes from Twitter user Gabe Follower, who has revealed a peek inside the code of Counter-Strike 2, with one line of code pointing to a file called "hlx_2d_basic." They claim it indicates a new Half-Life project.
Although thin, there's some sound reasoning that HLX stands as a codename, similar to the fact that Half-Life Alyx was codenamed HLVR. Despite this tentative link, some fans have latched on and reckon that there really could be a new Half-Life game on the way.
Half-Life X has been a rumour for years
Though the file inspection seems like wishful thinking on the part of fans, shockingly, a project called Half-Life X has been rumoured for years now, with fans expecting it to be a direct follow-up to Half-Life Alyx. Could Valve really be about to take another gamble on a VR title?
The fact that this rumour has been floating around for some time elevates the Counter-Strike 2 files claim from absurdity to something that could potentially be valid as evidence. It's bizarre to think that a single line of code could have revealed that a new Half-Life is officially in the works, but it could be very real.
