Favela may go down in Call of Duty history as the most beloved and unused map that the developers ever made.
The Modern Warfare 2 (2009) multiplayer map set the bar for how Call of Duty should play, offering a mix of engagement types that could all be as successful as another, chaining Pavelows to AC-130s into Nukes.
But it has never returned. Despite seemingly every other map from this era having made a comeback in another game, Favela has not. Now the devs have seemingly created a lookalike, mocking the OG fanbase.
Modern Warfare 2 adds a Favela lookalike map
Heading into Modern Warfare 2 Season 5, Infinity Ward is adding Putra Mar as a multiplayer map to join the Strike remaster, and with its Las Almas influence, gamers have instantly drawn comparisons between this and Favela.
"FAVELA IS BACK (horrible angles but you get the idea. It's the same building)," one fan said on Twitter. Another claimed, "It truly makes ZERO sense to have Favela in MWII now lmao. Maybe if they released it at the start, it wouldn't be problematic."
However, it seems like only one building in the Season 5 trailer resembles the classic map, and it's now been ruled out that Punta Mar is not a Favela remake, not even a rework akin to Estate and Pelayo's Lighthouse. Instead, it's just a different map entirely.
Will we ever get Favela remastered in Call of Duty?
Although it is clear that Punta Mar is not Favela, that doesn't mean that the two maps don't co-exist. In fact, we've seen quite a number of maps change location in the Call of Duty lore (think Showdonwn as the most recent example, given that it was based in Saudi Arabie in CoD 4, before moving to Al Mazrah in Warzone).
Hopefully, this could also happen for Favela too. All we would need to see is a slight shift from Rio De Janeiro to another North American (fantastical) location in Las Almas. Here, Favela could be integrated into Warzone alongside Punta Mar, opening the doors to its arrival in Modern Warfare 3.
So far, multiplayer fans might not want to bother holding their breath. Remastered Warzone POIs have scarcely become multiplayer designs, and Modern Warfare 3 has already been leaked to have Scrapyard and Terminal at launch.
